This case study describes the development and implementation of math self-placement at American River. Math self-placement consists of a Web-based testing and information site that allows students, or potential students, to gauge their level of math proficiency prior to talking with a counselor or enrolling in classes. All 13 colleges are implementing what they call “Tennessee completion practices”–reforms to help students choose, enter, navigate, and complete programs that prepare them for further education and careers. This report describes how the colleges are operationalizing the Tennessee completion practices in their own contexts, as well as how trends in leading indicators of student completion have changed since the reforms began. When teachers unintentionally use ambiguous language, students’ understanding of a subject can be negatively affected. We share background on specific instances in which teachers can create confusion with the language they use, and we investigate both pre-service teachers’ and college algebra students’ concepts of three common terms in mathematics: Solve, Evaluate, and Simplify by asking both groups to unpack their understanding of these terms through a writing prompt. We compare the language used by both groups in their definitions. The focus of this paper is an experimental program for one of these courses and data collected while implementing it. This is a second report on a naturalistic study in which mathematical paradoxes were used in the preservice education of high school mathematics teachers. The potential of paradoxes was tested for improving student-teachers’ mathematical concepts and raising students pedagogical awareness of the role of falacious reasoning in the development of mathematical knowledge. Increasingly, students who would have been required to take, and succeed in, developmental coursework before enrolling in college-level courses are now being placed directly into those courses while also receiving remedial support. This approach — known as developmental corequisite remediation — pairs a college-level course with a corequisite course designed to help students succeed in the college-level work. Critical race theory in education and the theory of validation serve as guiding frameworks.
