This interpretive case study of two middle school science-math teachers was driven by the general question: Given ubiquitous computing, how do teachers use computers in constructing curriculum and delivering instruction? Specifically, the researchers sought to examine the facilitators and barriers for teachers in using laptops in the classroom. Using qualitative methods, the researchers collected data during the first year of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). Differential effects of one-to-one computing on each teacher were found along two dimensions: the effect of technical technological issues, and the educational effect of technology policies. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The University of Wyoming (UW) teacher education program is a collaborative between UW faculty and educators from school districts throughout the state. Though the university faculty is charged with teaching teachers, the equally important “teachers of teachers” are the exemplary classroom teachers who provide modeling and expertise for preservice teachers. Throughout their training, students participate in campus-based coursework and classroom-based experiences at an assigned school site. There are four program elements: Phase 1, “Focus on Learning”; Phase 2, “Teacher as Decision Maker”; Phase 3, “Teaching Humanities, Literacy, Math/Science”; and Phase 4, a teaching residency. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: ENLIST-Micros (ENcourage LIteracy in Science Teachers’ uses of Microcomputers) develops state networks of science and mathematics teachers providing inservice education and support for the implementation of computers and technology in the classroom. In Alabama, the project operated from August 1990 through June 1994. Most inservice workshops were held at Auburn University. Participants included 50 urban, 22 suburban, and 31 rural teachers from schools in Montgomery and the Auburn area. The first 2 years of the project focused on training the teacher participants to use microcomputers and to share their knowledge with other teachers. In the third and fourth year, veteran teachers provided individual training and inservice workshops to other teachers. Eric.ed.gov – Creating Connections: The Internet and Teacher Isolation.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Four 3-year projects within the Rural Telecomputing Initiative enabled rural teachers in Montana, Colorado, Minnesota, and Tennessee to connect with math and science reform communities and use resources available through the Internet. This study of the projects’ first 2 years examined: (1) whether the projects made a difference in teachers’ isolation and attempts to improve math and science education; and (2) whether resources the projects developed were valuable to rural teachers in reforming math and science education. The study included two written surveys, 9 months apart, of teachers and principals. Evaluation teams visited two participating schools within each local project annually, observing science and mathematics classes; interviewing principals, teachers, and students; and moderating focus groups.
