Eric.ed.gov – Quantitizing Affective Data as Project Evaluation on the Use of a Mathematics Mobile Game and Intelligent Tutoring System

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Technology-enhanced learning generally focuses on the cognitive rather than the affective domain of learning. This multi-method evaluation of the INBECOM project (Integrating Behaviourism and Constructivism in Mathematics) was conducted from the point of view of affective learning levels of Krathwohl “et al.” (1964). The research questions of the study were: (i) to explore the affective learning experiences of the three groups of participants (researchers, teachers and students) during the use of a mobile game “UFractions” and an intelligent tutoring system “ActiveMath” to enhance the learning of fractions in mathematics; and (ii) to determine the significance of the relationships among the affective learning experiences of the three groups of participants (researchers, teachers and students) in the INBECOM project. This research followed a sequential, equal status, multi-mode research design… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Is There a Problem?

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is a narrative article, highlighting effective teaching strategies for teacher candidates at a four-year university in the South. The author examined preconceived negative notions teacher candidates expressed about being enrolled in a Math Block class and having to teach children about mathematics. After involving the teacher candidates in a hands-on series of classroom discussions and role playing related to problem-solving strategies, teacher candidates became excited about not only facilitating children’s exploration of problem-solving strategies but how much they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, engaging in hands-on lessons compared to rote and memorization skills they had experienced as children. Eric.ed.gov – Considerations for Realizing the Promise of Educational Gaming Technology

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Hope Elementary School recently purchased tablets for all of its students to facilitate the use of technology in the classroom. The principal at Hope Elementary understands that technology can be an efficient and effective way for teachers to access materials and differentiate instruction to support the achievement of all learners. However, some teachers are struggling to determine how to best use the tablets in the classroom. Ms. Williams is a special education teacher at Hope Elementary School. She is excited about the tablet initiative and has a number of ideas about ways she can effectively and meaningfully integrate technology into instruction. The principal at Hope Elementary has asked Ms. Williams to serve as an example for other teachers at the school to help alleviate their concerns about… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math Literacy. Final Report. Student and Teacher Guides.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This package contains student and teacher handbooks and a report summarizing a project during which the handbooks were developed as part of a numeracy education course for adult basic and literacy education students. Discussed in the project report are the following: development of the course’s 7 numeracy education units, field testing of the units with 8 teachers and 110 students, subsequent revision of the units, and production of a math literacy curriculum and companion student and educator handbooks. Included in the student handbook are a 22-item bibliography, brief discussion of the curriculum’s purpose and scope, and instructional units containing background information and learning activities on the following topics: reading, writing, and thinking about numbers; looking at numbers; estimating and rounding numbers; using calculators; measurement and its uses;… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Why University Teacher Preparation Programs Should Provide a New Set of Personal Constructions of Mathematics through Math Content Courses for Elementary Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher preparation programs are in danger of seriously under-preparing elementary teachers to teach mathematics for understanding if they wait to provide students with evidence of effective mathematics teaching methods in the mathematics methods courses. With strong traditional beliefs about how mathematics ought to be taught and their determination to be able to explain mathematics to elementary children, the methods course is much too late to change preservice teachers’ perceptions of mathematics or how to teach it. If we want to change the way they teach mathematics, we must do it in their mathematics content courses. In the content courses, we have a chance to provide them with positive and successful personal mathematics constructions. Only when they learn to become active problem-solvers, can they teach others the importance… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Digital Gaming for Evolutionary Biology Learning: The Case Study of Parasite Race, an Augmented Reality Location-Based Game

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Games have been used for a long time in teaching and learning. The increasing use of mobile phones makes it possible to link learning outside the classroom with augmented reality (AR). We tested how well the learning of conceptual models can be facilitated by AR games. We present a game designed for the in-service teacher-training workshop to model evolutionary and ecological relationships explicitly. The game, Parasite Race, models the life cycles of three different parasites and allows player to choose between two evolutionary strategies. We tested the game with experienced teachers and revealed a wide range of different gaming strategies: some of the teachers were able to reflect their game strategy and choose appropriate actions right away whereas some of the teachers did not and lost their… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Reducing Mathematics Anxiety: The Ways Implemented by Teachers at Primary Schools

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This research is an investigation of ‘reducing mathematics anxiety: the ways implemented by teachers at primary schools in Turkey’. This study is needed to understand the ways which teachers implement to reduce the level of anxiety that pupils face in mathematics. In order to get sufficient data a qualitative research methodology was preferred in this study. The sample which purposively selected was comprised of fifty teachers teaching 4th and 5th graders at primary schools in Turkey. The results revealed that to reduce pupils’ anxiety in mathematics, teachers chose such ways as motivating pupils, making math relevant, reviewing the given topic by examples and exercises, using games and also getting support from parents. It was also found that while using these given strategies, teachers did not evaluate whether… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Mobile Learning and Early Age Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The ability to develop engaging simulations and constructive learning experiences using mobile devices is unprecedented, presenting a disruption in educational practices of historical proportions. In this paper we describe some of the unique virtues that mobile learning hold for early age mathematics education. In particular, we describe how object-based learning, any place/anywhere learning, collaborative learning, gamified learning, customized learning, and adaptive learning, come to play in our work on “SlateMath.” SlateMath is a richly indexed portfolio of hundreds of instructional units, designed to support the teaching and learning of mathematics at the elementary school level (kindergarten through sixth grade) using mobile devices. SlateMath is cross-platform, multi-lingual, and freely available for schools and teachers world-wide. [For the complete proceedings, see ED557171.] Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Integration of Character Values in Teaching-Learning Process of Mathematics at Elementary School of Japan

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The state requires leaders who own intelligence and characters. Indonesia as a developing country is clearly very interested in finding out how to integrate the character values into the learning process in the classroom. Japan becomes a destination because it can provide character education to its students. Research Team of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) held collaborative research with Professor Takuya Baba, Ph.D. from Hiroshima University, Japan as the Partner Lecturer. The purpose of this qualitative research was to get input on how elementary school teachers in Japan integrate the character values in learning, especially in math lessons. Its main activities, conducting class observations, interviews, Focus Group Discussion, and triangulation with guidance from the Partner Lecturer. The research site was Miyauchi Elementary School of Hiroshima and at IDEC… Continue Reading
