Eric.ed.gov – The Individualization of Math in Grades Five and Six: An Experimental Program.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Fifth- and sixth-grade students in one school were instructed using the Mathematics Target System, an individualized approach, while those at a comparable school were given more traditional instruction. Students in both the experimental and control groups were pretested using the Pupil Opinionnaire, Attitude Toward Mathematics scale, and the Stanford Achievement Test. After a year’s instruction, students were again tested using parallel forms of these instruments. Differences between groups at each test administration and differences between pre- and post-test means were submitted to analyses using the Chi-square statistic. Although there were some differences between the groups at the outset of the study, the individualized approach was shown to be quite effective with fifth-grade students. The authors observe that independent influences on the control group resulting from increased systemwide… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Como ayudar a su hijo a aprender mathematicas. (Helping Your Child Learn Math).

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics has become increasingly important in this technological age. That is why it is even more important for children to learn mathematics at home as well as in school. This second edition of Helping Your Children Learn Math is for parents of children in kindergarten through fifth grade. It has been revised to include a variety of activities that will help children learn and apply mathematical concepts such as geometry, algebra, measurement, statistics, and probability in useful and fun ways. All of the 29 activities in this book relate mathematics to everyday life and complement many school mathematics lessons. Additional resources are also listed at the end. (ASK) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Beginning Reading and Math in PS 133, New York City. A Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet describes the program in Harlem (PS 133) which is based upon Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s reading and mathematics in color. The program was primarily intended to test the teaching of Gattegno’s methods and materials. PS 133 was considered to be a good site for the program because it was stable, pedagogically traditional, and staffed by a large number of experienced teachers and a principal who was known to be a dedicated, competent administrator. In Gattegno’s reading program, color is used only for the purpose of introducing words, and once sounds are mastered, color is discarded. The use of color simulates a phonetic language. All groups of letters with the identical sound are represented by the same color. Thus the “o” in “so,””know,” and “though” belong to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Application of Videodisc Technology to the Diagnosis of Math Skills.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Briefly presented are the rationale and procedures used to develop and validate an interactive videodisc program to assist in diagnosing difficulties in mathematics in grades 1-3. The mathematics assessment program is described as 408 criterion-referenced items divided into seven strands. Questions are administered until a student makes three consecutive errors; then the student is branched to the next section in a strand. At the teacher’s option, the test can be administered in either English or Spanish. Information is also included on equipment configurations possible among videodisc players, microcomputers, touch screens, and printers, and disc capacity is noted. Finally, comments on formative evaluation needs are given. (MNS) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Individually Prescribed Instruction–Mathematics (IPI–Math). Product Development Report No. 17.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report summarizes the mathematics component of Individually Prescribed Instruction (IPI). The first section outlines the overall goals, specific objectives, and philosophy of IPI; the organization of the materials; and the procedures for their use, with emphasis on the altered role of both students and teachers. The next section describes the origins of IPI, and names the key personnel (listing their philosophy and relevant research activities) and sources of funds. The third section describes the development of the IPI materials. The organization of the agencies concerned, the original development plan and subsequent modifications are outlined. Actual developmental procedures are detailed including the selection of demonstration schools, criteria for pilot schools, retraining of administrators and teachers, and formative evaluation.Final sections of this report outline summative evaluation, describe envisaged… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Revising the Community of Inquiry Framework for the Analysis of One-to-One Online Learning Relationships

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In online learning research, the theoretical community of inquiry framework has been used extensively to analyze processes of inquiry among learners and instructors within a community. This paper examines a special case of community of inquiry consisting of only one learner and one instructor. Together they engage in an online coaching discourse to form a relationship of inquiry. Within these relationships, coachees pass through processes of practical inquiry process while a coach supports the process. In this study, a framework and coding scheme were developed for use in a transcript coding procedure including 3,109 messages from an online coaching case in math for K-12 students. It is found that the elements of cognitive, teaching, and social presence, as well as the newly proposed emotional presence, which outlines… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – River Falls Mall Math Trails: Connecting Elementary Mathematics to the World.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This collection of activities demonstrates how the study of elementary mathematics can be extended beyond the school and involve teachers and students in investigative, problem-based experiences. The activities include topics in geometry, concept of number, algebra, measurement, graphing, statistics, and probability, and are organized into five different math trails. With this method of organization, up to 100 elementary students can participate in the activities on the same day. Each math trail has 10 activities and each activity utilizes the particular attributes of the section of the mall in which it is situated. Students collect the necessary data at the mall and then complete the activities upon returning to their classrooms by interpreting the data and applying their previous learning and understanding in mathematics to solve a real-life… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Writing, Solving, and Sharing Original Math Story Problems: Case Studies of Fifth Grade Children’s Cognitive Behavior.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this research was to understand fifth grade children’s cognitive behavior as they wrote, solved and then, in small groups, shared original math story problems. Research questions examined children’s: (1) beliefs about math in this problem-writing classroom, (2) math story problem-writing behavior, (3) difficulties with their self-generated problems, and (4) small-group problem solving behavior. Case studies were conducted in the context of a teaching experiment in one fifth grade classroom. Children were engaged to write, solve and then share math story problems three or four days a week during this one year study. There were three overlapping groups of participant children. Eight children were observed as they wrote and solved math story problems. Seventeen children, including the eight previously observed, were observed via audio-recordings as… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – A Second-Grade Math Lesson with Victoria L. Bill. School Development Library.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet is designed to be used with a video of the classroom of second-grade teacher Victoria Bill. The 40-minute video shows the teacher using a variety of manipulations, facilitating both large- and small-group discussions, and applying a problem-solving approach to math. The text in the booklet is based on spoken comments made by observers as they watched the videotape, and provides added insight into the instructional methods used in the class. The video and the accompanying booklet are divided into 16 events, each representing a change in the activities in the classroom. The discussion of each event begins with an assessment and overall description of the event, followed by discussions of classroom management, problem solving, and teaching strategies used in each example.
