The report covers the degree classes of 2006, 2007 and 2008. The status of exiting physics master’s varied greatly by the citizenship of the degree recipient. The majority of US citizens entered or remained in the workforce after receiving their degrees, where the majority of non-US citizens continued with graduate study in physics or another field. Of the physics master’s in the workforce, over half were employed in the private sector, with a vast majority working in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. Embedded in a university K-8 mathematics methods course emphasising the connections among mathematics, children’s mathematical thinking, and children’s cultural/linguistic funds of knowledge, pre-service teachers (N = 40) were given an assignment to analyse their own mathematics lessons utilizing a rubric tool with categories about children’s mathematical thinking, academic language supports, cultural funds of knowledge, and critical math/social justice. In order to understand the different approaches taken by programs housed on the same university campus, researchers examined 13 institutions that offer both a graduate and undergraduate program preparing new elementary and/or secondary teachers. While there is overlap in the topics each undergraduate/graduate program pair covers, what’s more striking are the different course requirements–even though both programs are offered by the same education school at the same institution.
