eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCO is a motivating series of audiovisual and print materials designed to overcome the negative effects of sex bias and stereotyping on the attitudes, interests, and aspirations of girls toward mathematics and mathematics-related careers. The materials teach mathematics skills, demonstrate relationships between mathematics and other subjects, and provide exposure to mathematics-related careers. They are useful for boys as well as girls at the pre- and early-adolescent stage; they are both multiethnic and nonsexist in text and illustrations. Module 2 focuses on patterns, sequences, and equations in language and fine arts as well as in mathematics. The audiovisual script is included, followed by suggested activities and activity work. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Techniques for integrating English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instruction and mathematics instruction, particularly the language of mathematics, are discussed. Focus here is on mathematics instruction for limited-English-speaking students in the mainstream classroom. First, examples of the academic language of mathematics that students must develop are outlined. Some instructional techniques that incorporate students’ own language and background in the construction of mathematics concepts and formal mathematics register are then offered. These include: techniques to make mathematics lessons more comprehensible and ways to promote interaction and provide a classroom environment conducive to language and literacy acquisition; methods for maintaining high expectations for language minority students and helping them develop higher-order cognitive and metacognitive skills and strategies; and assessment of language development alongside conceptual knowledge. A concluding discussion looks at the roles of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The underrepresentation of women and racial and ethnic minorities in computer science (CS) and other fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is a serious impediment to technological innovation as well as an affront to fundamental notions of fairness and equity. These gaps emerge in the early grades and tend to persist, if not widen, throughout the secondary and postsecondary years. The unconscious biases (UB) of teachers, school administrators, and fellow students may contribute meaningfully to the persistence of these gaps. Fortunately, a nascent literature on targeted interventions that directly address UB suggests there may be compelling opportunities to promote broader engagement in CS and STEM education and employment. The fields of neuroscience, social psychology, economics, and sociology articulate the many possible origins of UB and… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The study contains a total of 44 inservice or practicing teachers who were enrolled in professional development courses. A novel survey was created to determine a teacher’s perspective of his/her school culture, as well as to measure a teacher’s science achievement, math achievement, science self-efficacy, and math self-efficacy. The survey was administered at the beginning and end of the Physics and Integrated Math and Science Methods courses. Results show the changes of math and science self-efficacy beliefs and school culture beliefs. At the end of the Physics and Integrated Science and Math Methods courses, the inservice teachers believed they could motivate students to enjoy math/science, and the teachers also felt competent to answer questions about math/science experiments. The inservice teachers felt they could assist their colleagues with… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The guide is intended for teacher trainers providing pre- and in-service programs for mathematics, science, and language teachers, and designed to accompany a 34-minute videotape recording of the same title (not included here), to help teachers integrate language learning and academic mastery in math and science. The video was created for a teacher training program for schools with high proportions of ethnic- and linguistic-minority students, but has been effective with native-English-speaking students who have difficulty with the specialized languages of math and science. It is consistent with guidelines of major math and science teaching associations. The video illustrates ways in which language, math, and science teachers can promote classroom discourse characterized by inquiry, problem-solving, clarification and justification of ideas, and teacher-student interaction. It uses a documentary approach,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In the first decade of the 21st century, the nation, the states, and colleges and universities began to grapple with the challenges of globalization, changing demography, the implications of the digital era, and of a less expansive public sector. Although not a transformative period for higher education, the decade saw significant innovations in teaching and learning, intense policy ferment, and debates over the future of colleges and universities and their roles and responsibilities in American society. Parts one and two of this book describe several of the most interesting and significant developments in higher education, and in public policy, reported by leading journalists in the field of higher education. In part three, observers of American higher education comment on critical issues facing colleges and universities, the states… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper presents results of a study that sought to answer the question, “How does integrating dance and math in an intense co-teaching model of integration affect student attitudes toward learning math?” The goal of the dance/math project was to engage students in math in ways that reached students’ multiple intelligences and encouraged them to make complex connections and try new problem solving techniques. The classroom teachers who designed and implemented the project hypothesized that students who worked with a dancer once a week to learn math concepts would become more engaged in mathematics and have more successful and positive experiences with mathematics than students who did not work with a dancer. Overall there was a significant difference between the dance/math students’ and the non-dance/math students’ attitudes… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: By participating in these class activities, students will acquire mathematical skills and at the same time learn about aging. Topics related to aging are often quantitative, and therefore, subject to mathematical analysis and procedures. The activities, which contain teacher suggestions and all student handouts, deal with seven topics. In the first activity, “Graying of America,” students extract data from a graph of U.S. population growth to solve problems which illustrate changes in the age structure of society as they and their parents grow older. “Life Expectancy” is the topic of the second activity. Students use actuarial data to compute the probability of surviving a given number of years beyond a certain age. In the third activity, “Compound Interest and Population Growth,” students gain insight into population growth… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document contains the efforts of a group of teachers to develop curricular materials designed to correlate the subject matter of mathematics with that of a shop course in power mechanics. It is not an adaptation of traditional courses in mathematics, but an attempt to integrate the subject matter of mathematics into the concepts utilized in power mechanics classes. Content is presented under the following chapter headings: Fractions, Decimals, Per Cent, Ratio and Proportion, Directed Numbers, Formulas, Metric System, Geometry, Powers and Roots, and Shop Business. These sections of study are designed to be as inclusive as possible. Included are all activities with which a student will be involved in a teaching situation, along with evaluation materials, worksheets, guides, and other materials that will be used. Each… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This general mathematics guide, for use in grades 9-12, is one of a series of guides, K-12, that were developed by teachers to help introduce environmental education into the total curriculum. Since the nature of mathematics is abstract, students do not learn mathematics from ecology, nor ecology from mathematics. But, by observation and manipulation of environmental data, the student may inductively discover a principle in mathematics which can be reached deductively. The purpose of this booklet is to make an attempt to bridge mathematics and ecology. The guide is a supplementary handbook of ecologically-oriented mathematics exercises, designed to be self-contained and complete with answers. The exercises are built around 12 major environmental concepts that form a framework for each grade or subject area, as well as for… Continue Reading →
