The report covers the degree classes of 2006, 2007 and 2008. The status of exiting physics master’s varied greatly by the citizenship of the degree recipient. The majority of US citizens entered or remained in the workforce after receiving their degrees, where the majority of non-US citizens continued with graduate study in physics or another field. Of the physics master’s in the workforce, over half were employed in the private sector, with a vast majority working in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. In the U.S. public school system today, the method used to determine teacher effectiveness–and thus to drive salary, promotion, and tenure decisions–is based on a few external credentials: certification, advanced degrees, and years of experience in the classroom. Yet according to a new analysis of student performance in Florida that two colleagues and the author conducted, little to no relationship exists between these credentials and the gains that a teacher’s students make on standardized math and reading exams. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The processes of developing and the results of testing a master’s degree program designed to increase the number and quality of secondary-level earth science teachers are described in this paper. The master’s program is intended to serve practicing secondary-level science and math teachers who lack subject-area endorsement in earth science. There is need for programs such as this because there is a nationwide shortage of qualified earth science teachers. By targeting teachers who are already trained and certified in science or math, the program can focus solely on earth science content and pedagogical content knowledge. The program can be completed in 2 y via online academic-year instruction and on-campus or field-based training during summers. Teachers are frequently permitted to use graduate credits for recertification (Hill, 2007), and teachers with graduate degrees generally earn a higher salary or receive an annual stipend (Miller & Roza, 2012). Advocates have argued that graduate education may improve teacher effectiveness (e.g., Harris & Sass, 2011) and raise the status of the teaching profession (e.g., Sahlberg, 2015).
