Eric.ed.gov – Adapting Reading and Math Materials for the Inclusive Classroom. Volume 2: Kindergarten through Grade Five. ERIC/OSEP Mini-Library.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This book offers guidelines for elementary school teachers for making adaptations in reading and mathematics instruction for students with mild disabilities in the general education classroom. Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 1 presents eight principles for materials adaption organized according to the acronym FLEXIBLE: F-feasible (adaptations must be feasible in the classroom), L-lively (adaptations must be lively and fun), E-eliminated (adaptations must have the goal of being eventually faded out), X-explicit (adaptations must have a definite explicit purpose), I-intentional (adaptions should be part of a comprehension individualized plan), B-beneficial (adaptations should benefit the student with disabilities without detracting from the learning of other students), L-limelight (adaptations do not place undue attention on the student with disabilities), and E-evaluated (adaptations should be evaluated on an ongoing basis). Chapter… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Formative Evaluation in the Development of a Math Anxiety Reduction Program.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Teacher Education and Mathematics project, funded by the Women’s Educational Equity Act, developed curriculum materials to increase mathematical knowledge and confidence, increase the perception of mathematics as a female domain, reduce math anxiety, and develop skills in identifying and counteracting sex bias in mathematics instruction. To develop effective materials, a formative evaluation was to document materials’ use at each stage of development, to assess student responses to materials, to collect judgment of external experts, and to collect reactions and suggestions of instructors who used the materials. Evaluation issues explored in this paper are: reliance on observer descriptions and participant ratings, effects on students and instructional staff of intensive observations, effects on students of frequent requests for feedback and evaluative reactions, and the extent to which professionals… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Title I Elementary Math Program of Minneapolis: 1972-74. No. C-74-34.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The aim of the Title I math program was to improve the teaching of mathematics at the primary level in Title I schools. School staff and Parent Advisory Committee members had suggested and helped plan the focus of the project. It was expected that improved teaching would raise the level of understanding of basic mathematics skills and concepts of primary pupils. Testing of the children, however, was incomplete and inconclusive. All Title I primary teachers were eligible for the project. Most of the teachers from 25 public and 9 nonpublic schools availed themselves of the services offered by the project during the two years, 1972-74, covered by this report. This evaluation concentrated on the activities of the project and teachers’ responses to those activities. Teachers received over… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Annotated Bibliography of Books and Articles on Pre-School Math Materials.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This bibliography, pertinent to preschool math materials, contains math materials, contains references which are largely devoted to descriptions of materials and to an explanation of their use. The content of each reference has been described briefly and notation has been made concerning inclusion of plates which would picture the material or even show it in use. Also included in the bibliography are some math curriculum guides which may be of interest to teachers. This bibliography is by no means exhaustive, but it does acquaint the reader with several of the materials from structured math systems which are available, but not generally in use. Eric.ed.gov – Mathematical Treats Form the Stars: Integrating Curricular Elements through Partnerships between NASA and Math Methods Faculty.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics methods coursework can be an innovative environment through which to emphasize the integration of real-world data structures and opportunities. These opportunities can create instructionally informative opportunities for learners, as well as inform teacher candidates of innovative teaching tools at their fingertips. NASA offers numerous curricular opportunities to the mathematical methods coursework, with work focusing on both PreK-12 learners as well as university learners. Such a wide array of interest levels integrate numerous learning objectives, depending upon the needs and desires of the instructors and learners whom they serve. This paper focuses on the innovative opportunities that the NASA educational entity offers to the PreK-12 as well as university mathematical methods courses. Examples are presented in links to several Web sites, which are developed by and in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Function Plotters for Secondary Math Teachers. A MicroSIFT Quarterly Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines mathematical graphing utilities or function plotters for use in introductory algebra classes of more advanced courses. Each product selected for inclusion in this report is able to construct the graph of a given equation on the screen and serves as a utility which may be used by the student for an open-ended exploration of a mathematical concept or by the teacher as a demonstration tool. The products are classified into one of the following types: (1) general purpose graphing utilities; (2) demonstration tools; and (3) special utility programs. In general it was felt that the positive aspects of function plotters far outweigh the negative. The ability to automate the tedious process of plotting the graph of an equation enables students to examine more equations… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Science–Math Project: Junior High.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The guide, developed as part of an exemplary program for junior high school students, presents a plan for science and mathematics activities for grades seven and eight which aims at researching occupations which stem from experience students obtain in the general classroom curriculum. The unit is designed to operate in three stages: preparation of career backgrounds with students, completion of the career description form after the research field trip, and completion of the occupational interview sheets and reports to the class. The guide includes lists of objectives, preparation steps, activities (general and specific for science and math), and a discussion of results and evaluation. It also includes a sample interview sheet and career card. (JR) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Common Core Units in Business Education: Math Computations.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This secondary unit of instruction on mathematics is one of sixteen Common Core Units in Business Education (CCUBE). The units were designed for implementing the sixteen common core competencies identified in the California Business Education Program Guide for Office and Distributive Education. Each competency-based unit is designed to facilitate personalized instruction and may include five types of materials: (1) a teacher’s guide, which provides specific strategies for the units as well as suggestions for the use of the materials; (2) a student manual, which directs the student through the unit’s activities and jobs and brings the student to the competency level for the unit; (3) working papers, which are consumable materials used in completing the jobs and activities described in the student manual; (4) pre/post tests and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Multicultural Approaches in Math and Science.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education (ENC) helps teachers by offering a broad assortment of services that enable them to quickly locate educational resources. This document is one in a series of print catalogs designed to give educators information about curriculum resources available for teaching math and science in K-12 classrooms. Each issue of ENC Focus presents a selection of the Clearinghouse collection focused on a topic of particular interest to math and science teachers. This issue provides information about multicultural approaches in mathematics and science education. A one-page description of each resource includes an abstract of the contents, subjects addressed, grade level, publication date, ordering information including price, authors, and related resources.
