Eric.ed.gov – Instructional Multimedia in the Math Classroom and Beyond.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper is based on the reflections of a distance education (DE) mathematics instructor at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville, Tennesee. In this DE classroom, 30 students were present with the instructor at the main campus, 8 students at a remote campus in Blount County, and 6 students in Knoxville. The link between the classrooms was made by Instructional Television Fixed Service technology, which connected the classrooms via two-way audio, but only one-way video. The typical class period was divided into two parts: a lecture delivered via a multimedia program using Macromedia Director; and discussion of homework problems that were solved in class using an overhead camera. Problems encountered in the classrooms included: (1) the teacher had to attend to the needs of students he… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Minority Women in Math and Science. Teacher’s Guide.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This teacher’s guide contains lessons and activities that serve as examples of ways to utilize the student booklet, Minority Women in Math and Science, in a variety of subject areas. The minority groups dealt with are American Indians, Asian Americans, Blacks, and Hispanics. The guide consists of eight lesson plans structured in a conceptual format. Information as to the subject area, grade level, and name of teacher who developed it are given. Each lesson plan has an organizational theme given under the heading “Key Concepts” (stereotyping, discrimination, careers) which should facilitate the incorporation of these lessons into ongoing curricula. One or more “generalizations” for each lesson provides teachers with a statement or statements of content emphasis. Specific behavioral objectives are followed by a section on teaching procedures… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Architecture and Impact of an Open, Online, Remixable, and Multimedia-Rich Algebra 1 Course

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Less than half of the students in the United States graduate from high school and are ready to take college-level math courses. Many years and varieties of remedial math programs have failed to dramatically improve outcomes, especially at scale. The question we face is whether technology in general, and open educational resources in particular, might offer some solutions for improving math scores across the nation. Herein, we describe the work of the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education, and specifically the design and early evidence of impact of their multimedia Algebra and Developmental Math resources. We believe that the structure and function of these open educational resources can effectively meet the diverse needs of the nation’s math teachers and learners, perhaps paving the way to more personalized… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Utilizing a Flipped Learning Model to Support Special Educators’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Flipped learning is a popular pedagogical approach in K-12 and in higher education (Graziano, 2017), however minimal research exists on the effectiveness of flipped learning in special education teacher preparation courses. Special education teacher candidates enrolled in five sections of a special education math methods course engaged with interactive, flipped “learning lessons” prior to class. During class, they participated in extension activities and lesson planning. The researchers utilized mixed methods to evaluate the impact of performance on and engagement with these learning lessons and found positive predictive relationships with student achievement on all individual summative assignments. Nearly all students agreed flipped learning was useful in helping them meet the course outcomes. Most students specifically credited the flipped lessons as a facilitator of their learning because they allowed… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Exploration of Multimedia Supports for Diverse Learners during Core Math Instruction

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In the present study, mobile technology was leveraged as a learning tool for core math instruction during a whole number multiplication and division unit. The researchers redesigned paper–pencil worksheets from the math curriculum into multimedia-enhanced, interactive math practice (the eWorkbook) accessed by students on an iPad. With this eWorkbook, which was conceptualized within a Universal Design for Learning framework, we aimed to reduce barriers and capitalize on strengths by embedding flexible scaffolds/supports, allowing for student choice, and incorporating evidence-based teaching practices. Results of this case study suggest students with and without learning disabilities can leverage multimedia to foster unique opportunities for the understanding and expression of mathematical knowledge. Additional affordances of the eWorkbook include extending the reach of teacher support while encouraging self-support. Implications for teachers and… Continue Reading
