Eric.ed.gov – Using Literature To Help Emergent Readers Develop Concepts in Math, Social Studies, and Science.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: It is imperative that classroom teachers encourage emergent literacy without sacrificing literature or an introduction to some of the basic concepts in the content areas. This annotated bibliography features some examples of titles recommended by “Best Books for Children” which carry content standards recently established by national organizations and/or state departments of education for the lower grades. The bibliography lists four books which are compatible with science education content standards, four books which are compatible with history-social science standards, and five books which are compatible with mathematics content standards. Each annotation consists of a description of the book, a brief description on the concept addressed, and a class activity to be conducted after reading the book aloud. (NKA) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Impact and Implementation Analyses of the ELM Kindergarten Mathematics Intervention

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this 4-year efficacy trial, funded by IES under the Mathematics and Science Education topic, is to study the efficacy of a (Tier 1) core kindergarten math curriculum, “Early Learning in Mathematics” (ELM), when implemented under rigorous experimental conditions. In the first year of this study (2008-09), kindergarten classrooms were randomly assigned, blocking on schools, to treatment and control conditions in two districts in Oregon. There are two primary purposes of this presentation. The first is to briefly present impact findings from the first year of the 4-year study. The second focus of the presentation will be to discuss procedural fidelity and variations in the quality of implementation of the intervention. The focus of the discussion will be on the nature of the association between… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Effects of TRIAD on Mathematics Achievement: Long-Term Impacts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Although some research-based educational practices have shown promise, many fail to be implemented at a scale that affects more than a small proportion of children. Further, research on interventions for young children includes mixed results, with most documenting “fadeout” of effects after several years, but some showing lasting effects. In this study, the authors evaluated the long-term impacts of a model for scaling up early interventions, in this case a successful early mathematics curriculum, testing to see whether the originally-sustained impacts persisted up to 7 years beyond baseline. The original evaluation of TRIAD (Technology-enhanced, Research-based, Instruction, Assessment, and professional Development) employed a cluster randomized trial (CRT) design to test the effectiveness of the TRIAD scale-up approach, using the Building Blocks® early mathematics curriculum (BB) in preschool. In… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teach for America. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Teach For America” (“TFA”) is a highly selective route to teacher certification that aims to place non-traditionally trained teachers in high-need public schools. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified seven studies of teachers trained through “TFA” that both fall within the scope of the Teacher Training, Evaluation, and Compensation topic area and meet WWC group design standards. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for teachers trained through “TFA” on the academic achievement of students in grades pre-K-12 to be medium to large for two student outcome domains–mathematics achievement and English language arts achievement–and small for two student outcome domains–science achievement and social studies achievement. “TFA” teachers were found to have positive effects on mathematics achievement, potentially positive effects on science achievement, and no discernible effects on… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Annotated Bibliography of Books and Articles on Pre-School Math Materials.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This bibliography, pertinent to preschool math materials, contains math materials, contains references which are largely devoted to descriptions of materials and to an explanation of their use. The content of each reference has been described briefly and notation has been made concerning inclusion of plates which would picture the material or even show it in use. Also included in the bibliography are some math curriculum guides which may be of interest to teachers. This bibliography is by no means exhaustive, but it does acquaint the reader with several of the materials from structured math systems which are available, but not generally in use. Eric.ed.gov – Children’s Outcomes and Classroom Quality from Pre-K through Kindergarten: Findings from Year 2 of Georgia’s Pre-K Longitudinal Study

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report focuses on the results of the second year of this longitudinal study–the 2014-2015 Georgia’s Pre-K Program Evaluation. The purpose of this evaluation study was to examine initial longitudinal outcomes related to school readiness for children and the quality of their classrooms from pre-k through kindergarten. The primary evaluation questions addressed included: (1) What are the learning outcomes through kindergarten for children attending Georgia’s Pre-K Program; (2) What factors predict better learning outcomes for children; and (3) What is the quality of children’s experiences in pre-k and kindergarten? To address these questions, the evaluation study included a sample of 1,169 children (139 Spanish-speaking dual language learners/DLLs) attending a random sample of 199 Georgia’s Pre-K classrooms in year 1, and 1,034 of these children (118 Spanish-speaking DLLs)… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Children’s Pre-K Outcomes and Classroom Quality in Georgia’s Pre-K Program: Findings from the 2013-2014 Evaluation Study

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of the 2013-2014 Georgia’s Pre-K Program Evaluation was to examine the learning outcomes for children and the quality of their classrooms during Pre-K, as the baseline year of the Pre-K through third-grade longitudinal study. The primary evaluation questions addressed included: (1) What are the learning outcomes for children attending Georgia’s Pre-K Program?; (2) What factors predict better learning outcomes for children?; and (3) What is the quality of children’s experiences in Georgia’s Pre-K classrooms? To address these questions, the evaluation study included a random sample of 199 Georgia’s Pre-K classrooms and a sample of 1,169 children attending these classrooms. Researchers conducted individual child assessments near the beginning and end of the Pre-K year to examine growth in children’s skills. The assessment measures covered multiple domains… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Instruction in Spanish and Outcomes for Pre-Kindergarten English Language Learners. Research Brief

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study examined associations between classroom quality, amount of instruction in Spanish, and academic learning of Spanish-speaking 4 years-olds. Findings suggest that gains in reading and math were larger when children received more instruction in Spanish in classrooms with more responsive and sensitive teachers. It is possible that instruction in Spanish in high-quality classrooms may enhance the academic skills for children with limited English. [This research brief is based on the following published study: Burchinal, M., Field, S., Lopez, M. L., Howes, C., & Pianta, R. (2012). Instruction in Spanish in pre-kindergarten classrooms and child outcomes for English language learners. “Early Childhood Research Quarterly,” 27, 188-197. (EJ958040)] Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – WWC Review of the Report “Longitudinal Evaluation of a Scale-up Model for Teaching Mathematics with Trajectories and Technologies.” What Works Clearinghouse Single Study Review

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 2012 study, “Longitudinal Evaluation of a Scale-Up Model for Teaching Mathematics with Trajectories and Technologies,” examined the effects of “Technology-enhanced, Research-based, Instruction, Assessment, and professional Development (TRIAD),” a math intervention for preschoolers that combines a curriculum, a software-based teaching tool, and in-person teacher professional development. “TRIAD” is designed for young children, particularly those at risk of low math achievement. The study also included an assessment of whether continuing the intervention through kindergarten improved math achievement at the end of kindergarten. To measure these effects, two versions of the intervention were delivered: (a) “TRIAD” no follow-through (“TRIAD-NFT”), where children only received “TRIAD” in preschool; and (b) “TRIAD” follow-through (“TRIAD-FT”), where children received “TRIAD” in both preschool and kindergarten. Forty-two schools from Buffalo, NY, and Boston, MA were… Continue Reading
