Eric.ed.gov – Professional Development Schools and Developing a Curriculum in the Making with Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this article, the author shares his experiences on a journey with 10-12-year-old students from Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood. The quintessential point he wants to make is that curriculum is not all about what state boards of education decide is important for teachers to do with children, or what a teacher decides to construct alone. It also is certainly not fixed or finite. Rather, it is a journey of co-creation and looking to the students for what is worthwhile–what is worth knowing, doing, being, becoming, thinking about, pondering, and wondering. The author became fascinated by the idea of an integrated curriculum–not one that merely connected math and science and threw in a little bit of music, but one that takes into consideration the subjects and ideas that… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Sustaining Student Gains from Online On-Demand Professional Development

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A multi-State, quasi-experimental study was conducted as a longitudinal, two-year follow-up of participation in an online, on-demand professional development (PD) program. The purpose was to ascertain whether student gains were sustained in a second year of PD participation. Data verified gains in Year 1 versus Pre-PD baseline, with continued gains in Year 2 atop those achieved in year 1 of PD participation, reflecting a positive trend and continued advantage over non-PD schools in the same districts. Results showed that student in PD schools gained 7.7% (p<0.01) more in Math in year 2 atop 18.9% (p<0.001) gains from year 1, versus gains of 0.5% (ns) and 4.2% (p<0.01) for non-PD schools in the same districts. Similarly, students in the PD schools gained 10.2% (p<0.01) more in Reading in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Value-Added Evidence of Student Achievement Gains in Schools Hosting Wichita Teacher Quality Partnership Pre-Service Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: To understand the immediate impact of a university-school district partnership that places preservice teachers (both traditional undergraduates and graduate students in an initial licensure residency program) in a Professional Development School (PDS) model, this exploratory study reviewed data from yearly examinations required by the Kansas State Department of Education for the purpose of monitoring average yearly progress in reading and math. Scores of students (grades 3-5) in 16 PDS sites were compared to scores of students in 16 non-PDS sites in the same district, matched for similarity based on demographic criteria. Findings indicate statistically significant differences in gains in the percent of students performing at or above proficient on state reading assessments, with students attending PDS sites outperforming those who attend non-PDS sites. Findings related to math… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Candidate Apprenticeships: Assessing the Who and Where of Student Teaching. Working Paper No. 206-1118-1

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: We use comprehensive data on student teaching placements from 14 teacher education programs (TEPs) in Washington State to explore the sorting of teacher candidates to the teachers who supervise their student teaching (“cooperating teachers”) and the schools in which student teaching occurs. We find that, all else equal, teachers with more experience, higher degree levels, and higher value added in math are more likely to serve as cooperating teachers, as are schools with lower levels of historical teacher turnover but with more open positions the following year. We also find that teacher candidates are more likely to be placed with cooperating teachers of the same gender and race/ethnicity, and are more likely to work with cooperating teachers and in schools with administrators who graduated from the candidate’s… Continue Reading
