Eric.ed.gov – Role Perceptions and Role Dynamics between Graduate Scientists and K-12 Teachers in a School-University Outreach Project: Understudied Constructs

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Partnerships between scientists and teachers are an important focus of the current reform in science education. This study examined the roles and the dynamics of interactions in an NSF-funded Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) project. Data sources included interviews with teachers, fellows, and students at eight K-12 schools. Data were analyzed for emergent categories recognized by teachers and fellows alike. Roles played by the fellows were those of science/ math expert, scientist/mathematician role model, source of material resources, source of curricular enrichment, and teaching partner. Teacher roles were perceived as liaison between fellow and schools, teaching partner, teaching mentor, and science/math learner. Although the project underdefined the roles of the teachers, teachers showed noteworthy consistency in perception of their roles. The roles of the fellows… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Perspectives as a Framework for Strengthening Teacher Education. Draft.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This presentation reports on the third phase of research associated with the Teacher as Decision Maker Program (TADMP), a graduate-level program for middle/secondary school certification at Indiana University. The latest research explores the utility of these teacher perspectives as a tool for strengthening self-reflection on teaching among TADMP students. The paper describes and analyzes the impact of four interventions based on the perspectives: (1) initial reflections; (2) choosing a center and gaining confidence; (3) reflecting back on perspectives and teaching; and (4) confirming and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Impact of Religious Beliefs on Professional Ethics: A Case Study of a New Teacher

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This case study of a math and science teacher in a private religious school looks at the impact of a teacher’s religious beliefs on her experience of engaging with ethical issues in her practice. A Freirean ethical framework is used to analyze her struggles with differences between her own personal religious convictions and those of the school in which she teaches, avoiding undue influence on her students’ developing beliefs, and the inherent violence of schooling. This case provides an example of ways in which discussions with teachers about professional ethics might be broadened beyond codes and regulations to the everyday embodied, social milieu in which they work.
