Eric.ed.gov – Languages for Learning: Granting All Students Access to New Skills. Fishman Prize Series

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A single great teacher can change a life by introducing a new language, helping you master a new skill or opening a door you never knew was there. That’s why every year, TNTP awards the Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice: to celebrate a select cohort of public school teachers who demonstrate exceptionally effective teaching with students from high-poverty communities. Founded in 2012, the Prize is named for Shira Fishman, a TNTP-trained math teacher who has received local and national recognition for her achievements at McKinley Technology High School in Washington, D.C., where she continues to teach today. Each year the selection process becomes more difficult. The winning teachers receive $25,000 each–one of the country’s largest monetary awards for practicing teachers. During the summer of their award… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Midcareer Math and Science Teacher Training Program at Harvard University.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Background information on the shortage of teachers in mathematics and science is first summarized, with discussion of reasons why fewer persons are entering teaching and many experienced teachers are leaving. Then the Midcareer Mathematics and Science Program is described. It is designed to provide mid- to late-career professionals who already possess quantitative backgrounds with the training they need to become secondary school mathematics and science teachers. With six students in 1983 and 20 in 1984, it reaches those for whom the economic constraints of teaching are of less concern, status has already been attained in another field, and the change of pace and environment are welcomed. Conducted during the academic year with optional summer workshops, the eight courses in the program are divided among educational theory, methods… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Add-Ventures for Girls: Building Math Confidence, Junior High Teacher’s Guide.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This guide is designed to provide teachers with materials they can use with young women to help them to achieve in mathematics and to encourage them to take as many math courses as possible in high school. During their early school years, students develop skills and attitudes toward learning that form the basis of future academic growth. This guide for elementary school teachers includes strategies, activities and resources that deal with five major topics. Part 1, “Attitudes and Math,” includes materials on mathematics confidence, math aspirations and expectations, and attribution patterns. Part 2, “Math Relevance,” contains materials related to interest in mathematics, making mathematics more relevant and useful, and positive role models for girls. Part 3, “The Learning Environment,” contains materials on teacher-student interaction patterns, cooperative learning,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Centered on Results: Assessing the Impact of Student-Centered Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: While many of the concepts and approaches that comprise student-centered learning have deep roots in learning theory, the cognitive sciences, and youth and child development, empirical research on student-centered learning’s impact in K-12 classrooms remains limited. This report offers highlights from three studies commissioned by Nellie Mae, researched by Education Connection, American Institutes for Research (AIR) and Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) to examine student-centered learning in depth–what it looks like, and how students may benefit. Together, these studies strengthen the evidence base for those seeking to identify practices that will produce the greatest benefits for students. Furthermore, they provide new insights into how to achieve the highest outcomes equitably. These studies look at how to ensure that all students–including those in underserved groups–get… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Role of Advanced High School Coursework in Increasing STEM Career Interest

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Several avenues are open to students who wish to study advanced science or mathematics in high school, which include Advanced Placement courses and teacher-designed courses unaffiliated with organized programs. We employ a retrospective cohort study of 4,691 nationally representative college students at 34 randomly selected, colleges and universities to examine the relationship between taking advanced high school courses and students’ interest in pursuing a STEM career, while controlling for prior interests and experiences. We are able to distinguish between those students choosing to take an additional year in a science or math subject from those taking Advanced Placement (AP), which is most commonly taken as a second year course, but is increasingly taken as a first year course. We find that the number of years of a… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Evaluation of Learning by Making i3 Project: STEM Success for Rural Schools

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Learning by Making (LbyM) project is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation Fund (i3). As a five-year development project (2014-2018), Sonoma State University (SSU), in partnership with high-need schools and districts, has been developing an innovative, integrated high school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. The curriculum consists of Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) in earth science and biology as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS, 2013) and utilizes an easy-to-use Logo programming language that conducts data transfer and network communications in support of student-designed investigations. The purpose of this study is to understand how LbyM is implemented in high school classrooms in rural environments, to observe the influences of this curriculum on student learning and engagement, and to explore… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Exploring the Technical Expression of Academic Knowledge: The Science-in-CTE Pilot Study

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Science-in-CTE pilot study tested a curriculum integration model that enhanced the science that oc-curs in CTE curricula. The study replicated the National Research Center for Career and Technical Ed-ucation’s (NRCCTE) Math-in-CTE experimental research design (Stone, Alfeld, & Pearson, 2008) with applied science in secondary agricultural education. The semester-length study was conducted in North Dakota with secondary agricultural educators who were randomly selected to participate in the experi-mental and control groups. The experimental treatment mirrored the Math-in-CTE model of extended professional development, partnering experimental CTE group teachers with science educators, and use of a 7-element pedagogic framework. Standardized measures of science achievement were administered to students to determine the impact of the treatment on their science knowledge and skills. The results of hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysis… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math Space Mission. [A Product of] the Regional Math Network: A Teacher Invigoration and Curriculum Development Project.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This unit is intended to teach estimation skills in such a way as to be relevant and useful to students as they apply them in various problem-solving activities. The teaching activities feature the earth, exploration into space, and the other worlds in the solar system. The teacher’s guide contains four modules. Module I suggests the use of several multi-media experiences to set the stage for the activities that follow. Module II, “The Solar System,” incorporates teaching activities dealing with rounding numbers, estimation of sums, differences, products and quotients, graphing, and the application of these skills in problem solving. Module III, “The Space Shuttle,” addresses the use of the space shuttle and stresses the mathematical concepts of ratio and proportion. Module IV,”The Space Colony,” uses geometric concepts as… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Back to the Future of Science and Math Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Some successful innovations and their underlying rationales that were implemented 50, 60, and 70 years ago could be useful in solving many educational problems. Of major concern are the gap between the actual science and mathematics curricula in most schools and the demands placed on everyday living in the modern world dominated by technology and the gap between the actual science and mathematics program in most schools and the needs, interests and abilities of the particular students in those schools. Current reforms such as Project 2061, Project Synthesis, and the National Science Teachers’ Association’s project on scope, sequence, and coordination are discussed. Integrating science with other subjects, progressive education, and other historical projects are also examined. Included are examples of innovative programs found in the United States.… Continue Reading
