Sanger USD students are predominately from low-income families (73%); most are Latino/a (70%), and about one in five (18%) are English learners. During the accountability era of No Child Left Behind, Sanger had earned the reputation of being a turnaround district based on district students’ steep and steady improvement on California’s Test of Basic Skills between 2004 and 2012. Its success hinged on developing an organizational culture of continuous improvement and an instructional regime of direct instruction for students’ basic skills mastery. This case study addresses the question of how Sanger USD managed to shift instruction and student support to achieve exemplary results on the new… Continue Reading

In order to address this need, the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) awarded Early Childhood Educator Preparation Program Innovation (EPPI) grants to institutions of higher learning. The IBHE funded partnerships, comprised of two- and four-year institutions, to further develop models for early childhood educator preparation and build capacity in key areas of need. Recipients used grant funds to develop a wide range of seamless pathways for degree and credential attainment through innovative articulation and alignment of curriculum initiatives, strategies for advising and supporting transfer students, and aligning assessments to demonstrate candidate progress toward or attainment of key competencies. Promising practices to improve quality field experience placements,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – What Can Other Areas Teach Us about Numeracy?

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Education professionals, regardless of their specialist area, are broadly aware of the importance of numeracy. Internationally, definitions of numeracy (known elsewhere as mathematical literacy or quantitative reasoning), describe “an individual’s capacity to formulate, employ and interpret mathematics in a variety of contexts… reasoning mathematically and using mathematical concepts, procedures, facts, and tools to describe, explain and predict phenomena… recognising the role that mathematics plays in the world and to make the well-founded judgements and decisions needed by constructive, engaged and reflective citizens.” (Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, 2014, p. 37), or more locally, numeracy is “the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently across all learning areas at school and in their lives more broadly… It involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Examining the Effects of School Composition on North Carolina Student Achievement over Time

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explores the effects of school-level characteristics on North Carolina students’ reading and math achievement from fourth through eighth grade, focusing on the relationships between achievement and the racial and poverty composition of schools. After creating race-by-poverty cohorts of schools, I use multilevel models to examine math and reading achievement for the same students in fourth, sixth, and eighth grades. The racial and poverty composition of schools affect student achievement after factoring in student, family, and other school influences. In addition, increasing teacher quality and school resources reduces but does not eliminate the effects of school racial and poverty composition on student achievement. Policies leading to reductions in racial and poverty isolation in schools and increases in teacher quality should be pursued to guarantee equality of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – San Diego Unified School District: Positive Outliers Case Study. Positive Outliers Series

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) supports teaching and learning in California’s second-largest school district, educating students from preschool to high school each day. Nearly three quarters of SDUSD students are students of color, including 47% who are Latino/a and 9% who are African American. Almost 60% of students are economically disadvantaged, and 24% are English learners. Despite the wide achievement gaps across the state between students from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, SDUSD has excelled at supporting the learning of all students. SDUSD is one of seven districts studied by researchers at the Learning Policy Institute in a mixed-methods study that sought to learn from positive outlier districts in which African American, Latino/a, and White students all did better than predicted on California’s math and… Continue Reading
