Eric.ed.gov – Understanding the Meaning of Rural within a Middle School Mathematics Professional Development and Research Project in Nebraska. Working Paper No. 40

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Improving teacher quality in P-12 mathematics is a national need, and many universities and schools are working to address it. With the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), twelve math and science institutes across the country are helping P-12 teachers strengthen their capacity to support students’ learning. These NSF Institutes operate under the leadership of STEM university faculty, representing colleges of arts and science as well as colleges of education. The strategy is to build capacity by improving teachers’ content knowledge, pedagogy, and leadership skills. One such venture is The Math in the Middle Institute Partnership (M2) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). As part of their efforts to understand the place of rural in M2, the research team systematically interviewed the 63 rural participants from… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – “Of Being and Not Being:” Colombian Public Elementary School Teachers’ Oscillating Identities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article presents the partial results of a larger study conducted in Bogotá (Colombia) with public elementary school teachers. Given their nature, and since they are equally affected not only by one, but by every policy of the Colombian educational system, the primary school teachers cannot be treated here as if they taught English only. They are responsible for teaching all subjects (math, social studies, physical education, English, Spanish, etc.). Data were collected through focus groups. Partial results show that the teachers’ identities range from feeling powerful to feeling powerless, depending on where they stand, that is, the field of knowledge, in the classroom, and in their relationship with the policies makers. Eric.ed.gov – Do Teacher-Coaches Make the Cut? The Effectiveness of Athletic Coaches as Math and Reading Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Math and reading teachers who also coach athletics in the public school system are challenged to balance the responsibilities that come with fulfilling dual occupational roles. While many studies have examined teacher-coaches’ stress levels and job perception in the context of role strain, there is no evidence of how student achievement in tested subjects is affected by assignment to these teacher-coaches. A large administrative panel data set provided by the Florida Department of Education allows us to match students to teachers and use a student fixed effects approach to track changes in math and reading test scores over a seven-year time period, from 2002 through 2009. Despite the challenges associated with holding dual occupational roles, we find that students assigned to teacher-coaches perform at the same level… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – To Be or Not to Be an Online Math Instructor?

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Have you been asked to teach an online course yet? If not, chances are you will–and soon. The demand for online instructors is increasing, and institutions, including community colleges, are expecting their faculty, especially junior and adjunct instructors, to step forward. Your answer is not necessarily an easy yes or no. Although online teaching has much in common with face-to- face instruction, significant differences exist. Your decision may be aided by consideration of seven key factors, ranging from your own online learning experience, through the compatibility of your preferred teaching style with effective online instruction, to what adjustments you may need to make in designing mathematical activities for teaching online. A considered answer based on these factors will more likely lead to your success. The article offers… Continue Reading
