Eric.ed.gov – Impact and Implementation Analyses of the ELM Kindergarten Mathematics Intervention

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this 4-year efficacy trial, funded by IES under the Mathematics and Science Education topic, is to study the efficacy of a (Tier 1) core kindergarten math curriculum, “Early Learning in Mathematics” (ELM), when implemented under rigorous experimental conditions. In the first year of this study (2008-09), kindergarten classrooms were randomly assigned, blocking on schools, to treatment and control conditions in two districts in Oregon. There are two primary purposes of this presentation. The first is to briefly present impact findings from the first year of the 4-year study. The second focus of the presentation will be to discuss procedural fidelity and variations in the quality of implementation of the intervention. The focus of the discussion will be on the nature of the association between… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Academic Standards in Career and Technical Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: All public schools are required to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in order to avoid stiff penalties, per the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. This presents a unique challenge for comprehensive career and technical (CTE) schools. While there is an emphasis on the CTE path that students are interested in pursuing, academic areas must be mastered with proficiency in order for a school to be successful (in this case, as defined by the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, or (PSSA)). In addition, graduation in select districts is dependent upon proficiency. For a comprehensive CTE school to survive, it must have a sustainable teaching model that aligns and integrates career and technical skills with math and reading anchors. Central Tech, a comprehensive career and technical school in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math In-Service Training for Adult Educators.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In a series of mathematics education workshops in which teachers from adult basic education and vocational education worked together to design teaching situations on particular contents in mathematics in order to make explicit and bring into reflection the teaching strategies used by each group. The workshops constituted a common space of interaction for jointly designing teaching situations and creating common discourses that narrowed the distance between normative curriculum and actual teaching or real curriculum. In order for adult educators to teach effectively they must fulfill the following conditions: (1) they must provide a context for the teaching; (2) the knowledge taught must constitute a solution adapted to the problem; (3) there must be didactic variables that lead to the development of logic in a fruitful way; and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Developing Effective STEM Professional Development Programs

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: To help the United States stay globally competitive in terms of innovation and invention, the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has become a priority in P-12 education today. As the need for students to become stronger in STEM grows, so does the need for well-qualified STEM teachers who understand what is needed to develop relevant and high-quality STEM programs. Professional development (PD) can offer opportunities for those involved in the teaching of STEM to learn how to effectively integrate various instructional approaches, including “engineering design” into their teaching and learning environments. Professional development is important to STEM education, especially in the areas of technology and engineering. If engineering is to be recognized as an integral part of science, technology, and math education, stakeholders, organizations… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Instructional Variables of Inclusive Elementary Classrooms in Turkey

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study is twofold: to determine the instructional variables of the inclusive classrooms in Turkey and to investigate to what extent the student behaviors change according to eco-behavioral characteristics of inclusive classrooms. The study group consisted of 44 students between the ages of six and 12 with mild disabilities who were placed in regular classrooms and their teachers. The Turkish version of the Code for Instructional Structure and Student Academic Response-Mainstream Version (MS-CISSAR) was used for data collection which was based on a momentary time-sampling. The results of molar analysis indicated that the student behaviors displayed the most were no academic response, no task management, and no competing response. Attention and academic talk were found to be the teacher behaviors displayed the most during… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Project Smart-Science and Math Access: Resources & Technology.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes Project SMART (Science and Math Access: Resources & Technology), a multi-year professional development effort that includes components for all adults who regularly have contact with children with disabilities. The common goal of each of the components is the development of both efficacy and capacity to inspire children with disabilities to overcome challenges in the pursuit of excellence in math and science education. While the emphasis of the program has been on inservice teacher education, components have been developed for the following groups that support the efforts of children: general education teachers, special education teachers, parents of children with disabilities, and guidance counselors. The model program is intended to promote positive and permanent changes in the academic climate of classrooms and to provide teachers and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Expanding Approaches to Teaching for Diversity and Justice in K-12 Education: Fostering Global Citizenship across the Content Areas

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Educators today must be able to respond to the needs of an increasingly diverse student body and to teach all students the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for civic participation in a globalized, pluralist society. While state departments of education and national teacher organizations have begun to adopt global awareness in their teaching standards and evaluation tools, educators need to understand what globally competent teachers actually do in classrooms across subject areas and grade levels. This qualitative, multiple case study explores the signature pedagogies (Shulman, 2005) of 10 in-service teachers in one southeastern state who teach for global competence in math, music, science, English, social studies, and language classes across elementary, middle, and high schools. We found three signature pedagogies that characterized globally competent teaching practices across… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Toward a Start-to-Finish Cross-Disciplinary Instructional Model for National and International Higher Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Using their cross-disciplinary review of “Ideas that Work in College Teaching,” the authors explore the pedagogical commonalities of fifteen higher education instructors from SUNY Potsdam (State University of New York at Potsdam) in an attempt to reveal the secrets of teaching success across thirteen academic disciplines–math, computer science, geology, modern languages, political science, philosophy, history, biology, psychology, sociology, physics, and art. While the specific instructional disciplines varied considerably in the content that was both studied and presented, the authors found that the principles of effective teaching were quite similar across each of these disciplines. The insights shared by these fifteen accomplished instructors provide pedagogical wisdom that all teachers can learn from regardless of context or developmental age and stage of student capability and competence. Common goals and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Examining the Impact of a Framework to Support Prospective Secondary Teachers’ Transition from ‘Doer’ to ‘Teacher’ of Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A transition from “doer” to “teacher” for prospective teachers requires them to reorient from thinking about how they do mathematics to engaging with students and their work, understanding student representations, and planning instruction accordingly. To scaffold a transition, we developed a five-step mathematics as teacher heuristic (MATH) model. The study investigated the impact of MATH on the development of teacher candidates’ mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) and their pedagogical knowledge. Twenty-two preservice secondary mathematics teachers enrolled in a methods course participated in the study. Findings of the study showed that teacher candidates’ MKT was engaged as a result of analysis of the student work. While some teacher candidates based subsequent instructional planning work on what they noticed in the student work, others had gaps between what they… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teachers’ Use of a Pedagogical Framework for Improvement in Mathematics Teaching: Case Studies from YuMi Deadly Maths

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes the pedagogical framework used by YuMi Deadly Maths, a school change process used to improve mathematics teaching and thus enhance employment and life chances for socially disadvantaged students. The framework, called the RAMR cycle, is capable of being used by mathematics teachers for planning and delivering lessons and units of work with minimal training and external support, as demonstrated by three case studies. These, and other cases, suggest that the YuMi Deadly Maths approach is an effective model for scaling up professional development programs where school participation is voluntary and costs have to be minimised.
