tandfonline.com – InfoInternet for education in the Global South: A study of applications enabled by free information-only internet access in technologically disadvantaged areas

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract This paper summarizes our work on studying educational applications enabled by the introduction of a new information layer called InfoInternet. This is an initiative to facilitate affordable access to internet-based information in communities with network scarcity or economic problems from the Global South. InfoInternet develops both networking solutions as well as business and social models, together with actors like mobile operators and government organizations. In this paper we identify and describe characteristics of educational applications, their specific users, and learning environment. We are interested in applications that make the adoption of Internet faster, cheaper, and wider in such communities. When developing new applications (or adopting existing ones) for such constrained environments, this work acts as initial guidelines prior to… Continue Reading

We describe the design and implementation of lessons in undergraduate abstract algebra that integrate applications to teaching high school mathematics. Each lesson consists of a pre-activity, class activity, homework set, assessment questions and detailed instructor notes. The included applications intend to bridge advanced mathematics concepts to secondary school mathematics content for prospective secondary mathematics teachers, as well as provide instructors with a useful resource. Each lesson includes four guiding features: addressing meaningful content; making connections to mathematics teaching; emphasizing… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Including School Mathematics Teaching Applications in an Undergraduate Discrete Mathematics Course

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. This paper introduces lessons designed to incorporate applications to teaching high school mathematics in an undergraduate Discrete Mathematics course. Because many prospective high school teachers do not take courses that are specifically designed for teachers, providing materials aimed at teacher preparation that can be easily integrated into courses that serve a general mathematics major is one strategy for addressing mathematics teacher preparation. We developed lessons using four guiding features: choosing appropriate content; making school mathematics connections; incorporating active learning;… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – How Stable Are Value-Added Estimates across Years, Subjects and Student Groups? What We Know Series: Value-Added Methods and Applications. Knowledge Brief 3

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Value-added models measure teacher performance by the test score gains of their students, adjusted for a variety of factors such as the performance of students when they enter the class. The measures are based on desired student outcomes such as math and reading scores, but they have a number of potential drawbacks. One of them is the inconsistency in estimates for the same teacher when value added is measured in a different year, or for different subjects, or for different groups of students. Some of the differences in value added from year to year result from true differences in a teacher’s performance. Differences can also arise from classroom peer effects; the students themselves contribute to the quality of classroom life, and this contribution changes from year to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – A Baker’s Dozen 13 Palm Applications For Mathematics (And Math Related!) Instruction

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: If you are considering using handhelds in your classroom, you have a number of things to consider: (1) equipment management; (2) student contracts for out of class use;(3) tutorials;(4) curriculum integration, (4)success stories; and (5) current research on handheld effectiveness. To help teachers learn more about classroom use of handhelds, the Organization for Educational Technology and Curriculum (OETC, formerly known as Oregon Educational Technology Consortium) has worked in conjunction with the South Lane and Eugene 4J School Districts, both of which are recipients of U.S. Department of Education, Enhancing Education Through Technology (Ed Tech) grants to develop the Northwest Handheld Project http://www.nwhandheld.org). Palm handheld computers are being used in classrooms across America in creative ways to engage students in learning. The applications reviewed in this article represent… Continue Reading
