tandfonline.com – The neural basis of arithmetic and phonology in deaf signing individuals

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Deafness is generally associated with poor mental arithmetic, possibly due to neuronal differences in arithmetic processing across language modalities. Here, we investigated for the first time the neuronal networks supporting arithmetic processing in adult deaf signers. Deaf signing adults and hearing non-signing peers performed arithmetic and phonological tasks during fMRI scanning. At whole brain level, activation patterns were similar across groups. Region of interest analyses showed that although both groups activated phonological processing regions in the left inferior frontal gyrus to a similar extent during both phonological and multiplication tasks, deaf signers showed significantly more activation in the right horizontal portion of the inferior parietal sulcus. This region is associated with magnitude manipulation along the mental number line.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Using Essay Responses as a Basis for Teaching Critical Thinking – a Variation Theory Approach

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Educationalists have had serious problems in proposing well-grounded ways of teaching critical thinking. Reviews of the field have called for research to develop theory concerning the learning experience associated with critical thinking enhancement, as well as to explore more tailored teaching and evaluation methods. This article suggests an approach to teaching critical thinking with potential to handle these concerns. Based on an analysis of students’ essay responses, the article carries out a thought experiment to elaborate an example of design and enactment of lessons using the variation theory of teaching and learning. In this way, the article offers the research community a thorough description of a theory-driven and tailored tool for teaching and evaluating critical thinking, which deserves… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Everyday Examples About Basis From Students: An Anti-Deficit Approach in the Classroom

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract In this paper we share a classroom implementation of a task about basis in linear algebra, which was originally developed for research about the topic. The task asks students to construct an everyday situation that captures the definition of basis, and then to critique it mathematically. Using this task, the original research study uncovered learning resources from a group of undergraduate women of color. A mathematician who was not involved in the original study was given the opportunity to work with a group of underrepresented minority students in a linear algebra course. She was inspired by the findings of the study and decided to implement the task independently in her course. She shares how she did it, how… Continue Reading
