tandfonline.com – Introduction to the Special Issue: Insights and Lessons Learned from Mathematics Departments in the Process of Change

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract This editorial provides an introduction to the special issue, Infusing active learning into precalculus and calculus courses: Insights and lessons learned from mathematics departments in the process of change. We begin with providing the background for the special issue, including an overview of the current status of active learning in precalculus through calculus, what many of the papers in this issue mean by the term “active learning” (inquiry based mathematics education), and a brief overview of the literature on institutional change. We then offer an overview of each of the three issues, explaining how various papers relate to each other within each issue. We conclude the editorial with some reflections on the institutional changes efforts in light of the… Continue Reading

Despite shifting to emergency remote teaching, a teacher’s role and responsibility was to keep teaching their course to the same high academic standards as before COVID-19 upended our community. Meeting this challenge, without being able to use many well-established teaching practices, was also an unwanted opportunity to learn and experiment with new teaching technologies, techniques, and approaches. This note describes one such opportunity in mathematics: to design a final examination in a differential calculus course based on the connection… Continue Reading

Abstract The article is dedicated to solving extrema problems in teaching mathematics, without using calculus. We present and discuss a wide variety of mathematical extrema tasks where the extrema are obtained and find their solutions without resorting to differential. Particular attention is paid to the role of arithmetic and geometric means inequality in solving these problems. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Flipped Calculus: A Study of Student Performance and Perceptions

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Flipping the classroom refers to moving lectures outside of the classroom to incorporate other activities into a class during its standard meeting time. This pedagogical modality has recently gained traction as a way to center the learning on students in mathematics classrooms. In an effort to better understand the efficacy of this approach, we implemented a controlled study at a small liberal arts college. We compared two sections of the entry-level course applied multivariable calculus I, with one section taught in a traditional lecture-based format and the other taught as a flipped classroom. During our study, we collected and analyzed data related to student performance, as well as perceptions of the approach and attitude toward mathematics in general.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Poisson’s fundamental theorem of calculus via Taylor’s formula

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT We use Taylor’s formula with Lagrange remainder to make a modern adaptation of Poisson’s proof of a version of the fundamental theorem of calculus in the case when the integral is defined by Euler sums, that is Riemann sums with left endpoints which are equally spaced. We discuss potential benefits for such an approach in basic calculus courses. Link til kilde

Governmental and educational organizations have pointed out that students coming into the biological sciences require stronger skills in statistics and data modeling that are not usually addressed in typical engineering-based calculus courses. Our work here documents how faculty in biology and mathematics addressed this issue at a large urban university in the southwestern USA. The Calculus for Life Sciences course was redesigned to integrate data analysis and engage students in activities connecting the foundational and practical aspects of statistics-based… Continue Reading
