ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has made mathematical epidemiology a topic of critical importance, providing mathematics educators with an unparalleled opportunity. This opportunity is accompanied by a challenge: how do mathematics educators, some of whom have little personal experience with mathematical modeling, teach mathematical epidemiology to their students in courses ranging from precalculus to differential equations, and do so in a way that builds understanding of epidemic disease dynamics as well as mathematical methods? We address this issue with a… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The impact of COVID-19 measures on children with disabilities and their families in Uganda

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract To understand the impact of the COVID-19 public health response on families of children with disabilities in Central Uganda we conducted phone interviews with parents and children during the first 5 months of the outbreak (March – July 2020). Most parents and children were well informed about COVID-19 and were keen to adhere to government prevention measures. The majority said lock-down measures had a negative effect on their mental and physical health, social life, finances, education and food security. Access to medical services and medication for chronic illness had been limited or absent due to restrictions in travel, some facilities restricting access, and limited financial resources. The majority of parents reported loss of work which resulted in difficulties in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Readiness and resilience of the health systems of the UK and Russia during Covid-19 epidemics in 2020-2021: impacts of priorities, shortages and rationing

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 generated almost universal shocks to the interrelated complex systems of politics, society, economy, social care and health. The objectives of this article are to analyse health systems conceptually (section two) and empirically (case studies of the UK and Russia) in order to understand: their interactions with the other four complex systems; their readiness for the Covid-19 epidemics and resilience in coping with its challenges; and the impacts on them of changes in health priorities, shortages, and rationing. Evaluations are made in section three of the readiness of the UK and Russia health systems in January-February 2020 and in section four of their resilience during the First Wave (March-June). Section five assesses developments in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Fault Lines of Leadership: Lessons from the Global Covid-19 Crisis

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this article, we reflect on the role that leadership has played in the response to the global Covid-19 crisis. We discuss two major ‘fault lines’ of leadership: narcissism, and ideological rigidity. A fault line is a problem that may not be obvious under normal circumstances but could cause leadership to fail stakeholders and society at large in a defining moment such as a global pandemic. Using case examples from global political leaders we elaborate on these breaking points in crisis leadership and contrast them with the healing properties of leader compassion and mending forces of evidence-based decision making. We conclude our article with implications for responsible leadership research and practice. MAD statement The Covid-19 pandemic is a… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Covid-19 transmission modelling of students returning home from university

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT We provide an open-source model to estimate the number of secondary Covid-19 infections caused by potentially infectious students returning from university to private homes with other occupants. Using a Monte-Carlo method and data derived from UK sources, we predict that an infectious student would, on average, infect 0.94 other household members. Or, as a rule of thumb, each infected student would generate (just less than) one secondary within-household infection. The total number of secondary cases for all returning… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – A study on the factors that influence the agility of COVID-19 hospitals

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Humanity is facing the biggest challenge ever in the history of mankind as COVID-19 is lashing hard over the people round the globe. The present situation is getting worse as the management of heavy influx of infected individuals in the Covid care centres are difficult as well as the new emergence of mutant forms of Corona virus which may escape from the immune surveillance or the viral immune acquired responses against the newly developed vaccines, which may lead the global healthcare systems to uncertainty and it’s the situational demand to increase the efficacy of such systems by managerial operations. Agility plays a vital role in Covid-19 care to enhance the operational performance to meet the dynamic demand of… Continue Reading
