tandfonline.com – Fluid reasoning, working memory and planning ability in assessment of risk for mathematical difficulties

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The demands on mathematical problem-solving have increased in almost all school systems internationally and may constitute a barrier for children with special educational needs (SEN). This study explored the role of fluid reasoning (FR), working memory (WM) and complex executive function of planning (EF) in children (N = 62) referred for assessment of SEN, and specifically of risk for mathematical difficulties (MD). Performances on FR, WM and complex EF of planning were used to predict risk for MD. Results showed that planning ability predicted children at risk for MD, beyond FR or WM ability, when comparing with children not at risk for MD. It was concluded that assessing the complex EF of planning in addition to FR and WM ability is… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Difficulties Encountered by High School Students in Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The aim of this study is to identify whether high school students encounter any difficulties in mathematics and reveal the reasons for such difficulties. The participants of the study, which was a descriptive case study based on qualitative understanding, were a total of 164 students, including 85 students from Anatolian High Schools and 79 students from Science High Schools. Approximately 11% of the participants said they had no difficulties in math, whereas 99% of the students from Anatolian High Schools and 78% of the students from Science High Schools said they had difficulties in mathematic. Their thoughts about the reasons for such difficulties were analyzed by content analysis method considering the type of high school they attended. The findings obtained revealed that the difficulties encountered by the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Is Transition to a Special Education School an Effective Answer to Mathematics Difficulties?

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this paper, the authors looked at the effectiveness of special education schools for mathematics learning. Mathematics education is a key to increasing the later professional and citizenship opportunities of students and mathematical understanding influences decision making in all areas of life. Additionally, math failure correlates highly with referral to special education, grade retention, and school dropout and are cumulative and worsen with time, therefore, early identification and intervention is important. Empirical data from Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, was used, which makes an interesting case study as it has a strong tradition of separate special education. Study results indicated that students with special educational needs are better off in mainstream education than in a special education school, at least as far as mathematics goes. Also,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teacher Candidate’s Construction Knowledge about Function and Student’s Difficulties

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The quality of mathematics assignments from teachers to students is one important element that determines whether learning is effective or not. To make quality math assignments requires knowledge from the teacher about content and students, who are subdomains of mathematical knowledge to teach. This knowledge needs to be developed in prospective mathematics teachers since programmed teacher education. By focusing on one of the basic concepts in mathematics, namely the concept of function, research was conducted on 25 mathematics teacher candidates. Through interactions that occur in modified focus group discussions, we want to find out how prospective teachers construct knowledge about the concept of functions and difficulties of students. The results showed that in constructing the concept of functions and difficulties of students, teacher candidates worked backward, there… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Difficulties of Early Childhood Education Teachers’ in Mathematics Activities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study, it was aimed to identify the difficulties experienced by early childhood education teachers in planning, implementation and evaluation processes of in-class and out-of-class mathematics activities and parent involvement in such activities. The answers of the teachers to the questions on the interview form were recorded via a voice recorder and transcribed into written form by the researcher. In the direction of the findings, those who think that they have some difficulty in planning the in-class mathematics activities showed the causes as the idea of difficulty of mathematics, the lack of professional experience, failure to know the child well, the difficulties in adaptation, the lack of budget and resources. The difficulties in implementing inclass math activities were indicated as children’s mobility, distraction, having different levels… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Reality and Difficulties of Employing ICT in Teaching from the Perspective of Math Teachers of Middle Stage in Riyadh

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The present study aims to identify the reality and difficulties of employing Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching from the perspective of female Mathematics teachers of middle stage in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study sample consisted of (165) female Math teachers of middle stage in Riyadh. The tool utilized is a questionnaire; and in order to answer the study questions and verify the validity of its hypotheses, the author used frequencies, arithmetic means, standard deviations, ANOVA, and the Tukey Test. The results showed that the degrees of the availability of most of the domains of using devices and applications in teaching of Math were (often and sometimes). The results also showed that the availability of most of indicators of ICT employment in the teaching of Math for… Continue Reading

Combining mathematical and physical understanding in reasoning is difficult, and a growing body of research shows that students experience problems with the combination of physics and mathematics in reasoning beyond the introductory level. We investigated students’ reasoning about boundary conditions (BCs) for the diffusion equation by conducting exploratory task-based, think-aloud interviews with twelve undergraduate students majoring in physics or mathematics. We identified several difficulties students experienced while solving the interview task and categorized them using the conceptual blending framework.… Continue Reading
