Eric.ed.gov – Making the Grade: Teacher Education’s Role in Achieving the National Education Goals. ERIC Digest.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 1989 Charlottesville Education Summit of the nation’s governors resulted in the National Education Goals which describe six priorities (readiness for school; high school completion; student achievement; world leadership in science and math; adult literacy; and safe, disciplined, and drug free schools) for public schools to achieve by the year 2000. As originally written, the goals did not include a distinct role for higher education nor did they acknowledge the importance of teachers to their success. Policy makers have begun to address the omission and have proposed an additional goal that calls for teachers to “have access to programs for the continued improvement of professional skills.” This digest highlights initiatives taken by the teacher education community in support of achieving the goals. Issues addressed include the failure of research to find any inherent differences in girls’ and boys’ abilities in mathematics, the underrepresentation of women in mathematics-related fields, strategies to motivate girls to take more mathematics courses, and strategies to encourage girls to consider mathematical and scientific careers. The second section offers innovative approaches in mathematics education funded by the Women’s Educational Equity Act (WEEA) Project. A list of the products mentioned in the article is… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Motivating American Indian Students in Science and Math. ERIC Digest.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The digest summarizes major characteristics of American Indian student needs in the disciplines of science and math and offers constructive ways in which students may be motivated for greater achievement. Characteristics of American Indian students’ learning styles which may affect science and math motivation are outlined: seeing and listening, practicality, caution, and field sensitive orientation. Eric.ed.gov – Integrating Science and Math in Vocational Education. ERIC Digest.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Although science and math are increasingly important in the workplace, many students, especially females, avoid these subjects.
