Eric.ed.gov – Preliminary Findings from a Multi-Year Scale-Up Effectiveness Trial of Everyday Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Given the importance of early mathematics instruction and curricula for preventing mathematics difficulties in later grades, it is necessary to identify effective mathematics curricula and instruction to ensure that children become proficient in early mathematics content and procedures. Everyday Mathematics (EM), was reviewed by the What Works Clearinghouse and is reported to have “potentially positive effects” on students’ mathematics achievement. However, most of the studies that have evaluated EM have used quasi-experimental designs or are small-scale randomized control trials. This study reports the preliminary year one findings for Kindergarten and 3rd grade cohorts of the first scale-up evaluation of this widely used curriculum. The results of this study will contribute to understanding whether EM is effective in promoting mathematic proficiency in the elementary grades when implemented “at… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Close Encounters with Everyday Math (Math and Practical Arts/Life). Module 4. MATHCO Teacher’s Guide.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCO is a motivating series of audiovisual and print materials designed to overcome the negative effects of sex bias and stereotyping on the attitudes, interests, and aspirations of girls toward mathematics and mathematics-related careers. The materials teach mathematics skills, demonstrate relationships between mathematics and other subjects, and provide exposure to mathematics-related careers. They are useful for boys as well as girls at the pre- and early-adolescent stage; they are both multiethnic and nonsexist in text and illustrations. Module 4 focuses on practical applications of mathematics, including making change, adjusting recipes, unit pricing, ordering from catalogs, building a doghouse, and calling long distance. Activities and activity worksheets are included, in addition to the audiovisual script. (MNS) Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Everyday Examples About Basis From Students: An Anti-Deficit Approach in the Classroom

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract In this paper we share a classroom implementation of a task about basis in linear algebra, which was originally developed for research about the topic. The task asks students to construct an everyday situation that captures the definition of basis, and then to critique it mathematically. Using this task, the original research study uncovered learning resources from a group of undergraduate women of color. A mathematician who was not involved in the original study was given the opportunity to work with a group of underrepresented minority students in a linear algebra course. She was inspired by the findings of the study and decided to implement the task independently in her course. She shares how she did it, how… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Everyday Arts for Special Education Impact Evaluation. District 75, New York City Department of Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE) program on elementary special education students’ academic achievement (reading and math) and social-emotional learning. EASE was a 5-year program providing professional development and instruction in the arts in 10 New York City special education schools. The program served 300 teachers and 5,334 special education students over the 5 years. Through the program, special education teachers learned arts-based strategies to integrate into their instruction. The program included: (1) professional development workshops, (2) collaborative classroom modeling by teaching artists, (3) on-site professional development, (4) classroom instruction by special education teachers and visiting teaching artists. Impact was investigated through a quasi-experimental design, using the New York State Alternative Assessment (NYSAA) and the… Continue Reading
