tandfonline.com – The impact of cooperative learning approach on the development of EFL learners’ speaking fluency

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The current study investigated the impact of using two cooperative learning strategies on the development of oral English language fluency among Iranian intermediate EFL learners. First, 72 learners studying at a private English language institute were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group, each of equal size (n = 24). An equivalence of language proficiency between the members of the three groups was confirmed with the results from an Oxford Placement Test. Next, all participants undertook an oral fluency pre-test prior to either an eight-week treatment intervention or control phase. Over the eight-week study duration, the two treatment groups were each engaged in different cooperative learning approaches either Numbered heads or Think-pair-share while the control group was… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Children’s development of semantic verbal fluency during summer vacation versus during formal schooling

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Purpose: Children’s results on school-related achievements tests, such as aspects of math, reading and writing, have been shown to decline following a lengthy summer vacation. Few studies have investigated whether this also applies to vocabulary skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate how lexical organization and retrieval, assessed by a semantic verbal fluency (SVF) task, develops during a lengthy summer vacation versus formal schooling. Method: Sixty-eight children with mean age of 7.9 (ranging from 6.5 to 9.1), were assessed pre- and post-summer vacation and post-fall semester using two SVF categories (Animals and Clothes). The number of words produced in both categories gave the total score. Results: The result of the SVF tests decreased following summer vacation.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – On the relationship between Iranian EFL learners’ reading fluency, their personality types and learning styles

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between EFL personality types, their learning style, and their reading fluency. To this end, 130 male and female intermediate EFL learners were selected from three institutes. They were asked to fill in two questionnaires including a Holland’s questionnaire of personality types and Reid’s Perceptual Learning Style Preference (PLSP) Survey. Moreover, they were asked to read a reading section of Active Skills for Reading to measure their reading fluency. Pearson coefficient of correlation was employed to answer the first and second research questions and a multiple regression analysis was run after checking the preliminary assumptions. The results of the study indicated that there is a significant relationship between… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Fluency in Second Language Testing: Insights From Different Disciplines

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article considers the construct of fluency in second language assessment and how it might be informed by research in applied linguistics. It briefly describes the way fluency is conceptualized in four language tests, as embodied in their respective assessment criteria, to show where the field is at present. The article then takes into account recent insights from applied linguistics, and from the fields of psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics. The article questions the current conceptualization of fluency in language testing, in which it is defined as a concept that should be sought in the ear of the beholder, and where disfluency is only seen as a deficit. Future research should focus on finding ways to ensure that… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Mathematical études: embedding opportunities for developing procedural fluency within rich mathematical contexts

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract In a high-stakes assessment culture, it is clearly important that learners of mathematics develop the necessary fluency and confidence to perform well on the specific, narrowly defined techniques that will be tested. However, an overemphasis on the training of piecemeal mathematical skills at the expense of more independent engagement with richer, multifaceted tasks risks devaluing the subject and failing to give learners an authentic and enjoyable experience of being a mathematician. Thus, there is a pressing need for mathematical tasks which embed the practice of essential techniques within a richer, exploratory and investigative context. Such tasks can be justified to school management or to more traditional mathematics teachers as vital practice of important skills; at the same time, they… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Effectiveness of Using iPads to Build Math Fluency

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Research into integrating technology such as iPads into the curriculum for students with disabilities is still new. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the use of a basic math skill application on an iPad to increase basic math fluency. As part of a classwide academic intervention, the study was conducted with 10 students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities enrolled in a special education school. This four-week study employed a single-case reversal design (ABAB). Examination of data involved visual and statistical analysis techniques. Four key findings emerged. First, results indicated this intervention to have a positive effect on basic math fluency. Second, results showed that teachers perceived that the iPads had a positive impact on student engagement and interest in content. Third,… Continue Reading
