ABSTRACT Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a growing literature bemoaning the level of quantitative methods provision within the U.K. Higher Education sector, noting its negative impact upon the subsequent skills of graduates and their preparedness for the workplace. The present paper documents and evaluates an attempt to counter these issues via the introduction of an increasing element of flexible learning on a business and financial forecasting module. Using a mixture of empirical methods, it is shown that… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Café Data 2.0: New Data From a New and Improved Café

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this article, we revisit the café story first introduced in 2011. Recent data from this café run by business students at a Midwestern public university are explored and analyzed. The data were collected using a point-of-sale system over a 3-month period during the spring semester of 2015. These data can be used in introductory statistics courses to illustrate the use of time series and forecasting, applications of data mining and visualization, as well as sampling, confidence intervals, and inference using ANOVA and chi-square tests for independence. Since the data pertain to a student-run business, we believe that statistics students, especially those in business disciplines, will find the data’s context to be relevant and interesting. In addition to… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Prediction of remaining service life of pavement using an optimized support vector machine (case study of Semnan–Firuzkuh road)

ABSTRACT Accurate prediction of the remaining service life (RSL) of pavement is essential for the design and construction of roads, mobility planning, transportation modeling as well as road management systems. However, the expensive measurement equipment and interference with the traffic flow during the tests are reported as the challenges of the assessment of RSL of pavement. This paper presents a novel prediction model for RSL of road pavement using support vector regression (SVR) optimized by particle filter to overcome… Continue Reading
