Eric.ed.gov – Effects of the Kentucky Virtual Schools’ Hybrid Program for Algebra I on Grade 9 Student Math Achievement. Final Report. NCEE 2012-4020

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 2006-11 Regional Educational Laboratory Appalachia at CNA conducted a rigorous evaluation of the Kentucky Virtual Schools hybrid algebra I curriculum. The curriculum combines traditional face-to-face instruction with an online program. This study used a two-cohort sample with 25 high schools in year 1 (SY 07/08: 13 treatment and 12 control) and 22 in year 2 (SY 08/09: 11 and 11), the randomized sample included 6,908 students, 61.4 percent of whom were in rural schools. As reported in the study, “Effects of the Kentucky Virtual Schools Hybrid Program for Algebra I on Grade 9 Student Math Achievement,” researchers found that the hybrid class format was no more effective at increasing student achievement and future coursetaking in math than algebra offered in the traditional face-to-face format Eight appendixes… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – “In this class we are so different that I can be myself!” Intercultural dialogue in a first grade upper secondary school in Norway

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Focus of this article is immigrant youth and Norwegians-born to immigrant parents in upper secondary school in Norway. The study was conducted in a first year of a general study class in upper secondary school, where 11 of 24 students were immigrants. Previous research on immigrants in school tends to show a picture of a marginalized group in Norwegian schools which is characterized by egalitarianism. The research question of the article is: What can we learn from students’ experiences with an inclusive class environment based on a case study? What contributes to their experience of a good class environment? Through observation of the class and interviews with students, we find that diversity is accepted. Pupils show mutual respect… Continue Reading

ABSTRACT The current article examined educational achievement at lower-secondary level in Sweden (Grade 9), using grades and national test results (NTR) as the dependent variables. Linear regressions and bivariate correlations indicated that the proportion of highly-educated individuals in each municipality was positively associated with grades and NTR and that the proportion of welfare recipients and non-natives, as well as rural location, had negative associations. In relation to two case studies with fewer observations, teacher certification rates were more strongly… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effectiveness of the Touch Math Program with Fourth and Fifth Grade Special Education Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The math achievement of third and fourth grade special education students has been identified as an area of concern within a public school located in a small rural town located on the east coast. The purpose of this action research study was to investigate whether or not the Touch Math strategy increased the math ability of third and fourth grade Special Education students. Using convenience sampling, third and fourth grade Special Education students were given a teacher made test , Test of Mathematical Ability 2nd Edition (TOMA-2), pre and post instruction, and observed before, after, and during instruction. This data was analyzed through the use of a t-test. Data was examined to determine whether or not students showed an increased score on both the teacher made test… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Connecting PD to Practice: Using a Task in 7th Grade Math

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study, we expand the Cohen and Ball triangle of interactions to explore the relationship of professional development to classroom practice. We consider a case study of one teacher’s implementation of a task from professional development in her 7th grade classroom. We were specifically interested in how the content and pedagogy of the professional development would be adopted by the teacher. Our findings suggest that this teacher treated pedagogy and mathematical content as separable, which led to problematic implementation of PD practices. Eric.ed.gov – iLEAP Assessment Guide-Revised, Grade 5: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Louisiana Believes” embraces the principle that all children can achieve at high levels, as evidenced in Louisiana’s recent adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). “Louisiana Believes” also promotes the idea that Louisiana’s educators should be empowered to make decisions to support the success of their students. In keeping with these values, the Department has created transitional assessment guides to help prepare teachers and students as they transition to the new CCSS over the next two years. These guides reflect the State’s commitment to consistent and rigorous assessments and provide educators and families with clear information about expectations for student performance. The “iLEAP Assessment Guide” provides an overview of Louisiana assessments administered through the integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (iLEAP). In addition to providing teachers with… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Examining the Influence of a Mobile Learning Intervention on Third Grade Math Achievement

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Third grade students at a Midwestern elementary school participated in a 9-week mobile learning intervention (MLI). Two classrooms used Everyday Math and daily practice using flashcards, etc., to learn multiplication. Two other classrooms used Everyday Math and web applications for the iPod touch for daily practice. MLI students outperformed comparison students on a postintervention multiplication test controlling for several covariates, including prior achievement, home iPod touch use, and previous teacher, among others. The medium-sized performance advantage (b = 0.217) was statistically significant at the 0.01 alpha level. The MLI influence on the most difficult multiplication items was also statistically significant but less important than the student’s demographic profile and the teacher’s advanced educational technology degree. Experimental research is needed to assess longer-term achievement effects for diverse student… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Multiple Representations in 8th Grade Mathematics Textbook and the Extent to Which Teachers Implement Them

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study, firstly, aimed at investigating the various types of the multiple math representations and transitions among them in the 8th grade math textbook, and secondly, teachers’ use of these representations in teaching. The current study employed the content analysis approach to investigate the multiple mathematical representations and transitions among them in 8th Grade Mathematics Textbook. An observation method was used to analyses the teacher practices (n=35 observations), and record the representations and transitions. The results showed that there was an existence of symbol and verbal representations in the textbook and teachers’ implementation. Meanwhile, the other three representations (pictures and figures, models and Cutters, and life situations) and the transactions between them were at low rates in the textbook and teachers’ implementation.
