tandfonline.com – Interest development, self-related information processing, and practice

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Educators have a critical stake in supporting the development of interest—as the presence of interest benefits sustained engagement and learning. Neuroscientific research has shown that interest is distinct from, but overlapping with, self-related information processing, the personally relevant connections that a learner makes to content (e.g., mathematics). We propose that consideration of self-related information processing is critical for encouraging interest development in at least two ways. First, support for learners to make self-related connections to content may provide a basis for the triggering of their interest. Triggered interest encourages individuals to search for more information, and to persevere in understanding material that otherwise might feel meaningless. Second, for learners who already have an initial interest in the content,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Fiscal Year 2008 U.S. Department of Education Budget Summary and Background Information

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Five years ago the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) launched a revolution in our education system by insisting that all students should be proficient in reading and math by 2014 and demanding comprehensive reforms to reach this national goal, including strong assessment and accountability systems, a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, more choices for students and parents, a new emphasis on school improvement, and the use of research-based instructional practices. Under NCLB, States and local school districts have made strides in putting these reforms in place, and the first returns are promising. The latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress show that we have reversed a decade of stagnation in student achievement, with scores rising significantly in both reading and math in the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Learning Information System Effects on Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Scores for five subjects (Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in grades 2 through 8) from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program were analyzed for several hundred Tennessee grade schools. Schools which owned the Accelerated Reader learning information system (a computer program which allows teachers to monitor and manage student literature-based reading) were compared with schools that had not purchased AR. Schools that owned AR outperformed others in all grades and subjects. (Contains five figures and five tables of data; an appendix contains a brief introduction to the Accelerated Reader.) tandfonline.com – Status analysis of geographic information science major in Chinese higher education

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Geographic Information Science (GIS) Major in China has been developing and flourishing for nearly 40 years. Chinese educators have made many achievements on major construction in GIS. However, opportunities and challenges coexist under the new situation of ‘Double First-Rate’ major construction in China. Thus, investigating and analysing the major status comprehensively are necessary for enhancing the development of the GIS major. This study analyses the enrolment magnitude of undergraduate and postgraduate students, student development, construction of teaching team and professional curriculum construction for GIS majors in mainland Chinese universities. The professional survey results showed that there are about 30,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates who graduate with GIS degrees every year. However, most of the undergraduates in this major do… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Engaging Parents in Education: Lessons from Five Parental Information and Resource Centers. Innovations in Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Children benefit academically when parents and educators work together. For this reason, parents’ involvement in their children’s education is a priority of the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.” But a strong connection between parents and educators does not come about automatically. Both parties may need to learn new roles and skills and develop the confidence to use them, especially as parents move beyond traditional activities, like helping children with homework, and toward shared responsibility for school improvement. Intermediary organizations, like federally funded Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs), can help. Drawing on lessons learned from five PIRCs across the country that have been meeting this challenge, this guide shares promising strategies for increasing effective parent involvement. It explains “how to” strategies that the Parent Information… Continue Reading
