tandfonline.com – A narrative approach to university instructors’ stories about promoting student engagement during COVID-19 emergency remote teaching in Saudi Arabia

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic affected all aspects of human life, with significant impacts on education, as higher education institutions across the world were forced to make rapid transition to a fully online education format with no time to prepare. This qualitative study applied the narrative approach to examine the stories of six university instructors regarding their experiences with promoting student engagement during the COVID-19 emergency remote teaching. The study findings present the instructors’ feelings during the transition to distance education, the challenges they faced, and their efforts to promote their students’ engagement by using various strategies and assessments and by providing the students with emotional support. The findings also present the effect of local culture and millennial generation student… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – A Course to Reduce Math Anxiety and Sex-Role Stereotyping in Elementary Education. Instructor’s Handbook.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This handbook provides information on the purpose, organization, and use of Teacher Education and Mathematics (TEAM) modules within the context of a teacher education course for elementary education students or as supplementary materials to such a course. The four mathematics and four attitudinal modules are designed to produce four outcomes for learners: (1) increased mathematics knowledge and skills; (2) more confidence (and less math anxiety) in dealing with mathematics; (3) skill in identifying sex-role stereotyping in curriculum materials and teaching behaviors; and (4) perception of mathematics as useful and appropriate for females. Topics addressed in the mathematics modules include patterns, approximation and estimation, choice and chance, and metric measurement. Topics addressed in the four attitudinal modules include sex-role stereotypes, women and mathematics careers, women as mathematicians, and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – One Instructor’s Quest for a Collaborative Professional Culture

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With a B.S. in math but no prior math education training, the author’s first job as a math teacher was at an alternative charter school with a holistic mission. The author struggled tremendously and no doubt left numerous opponents to math reform in his wake. Fortunately, he attributed his ineffectiveness to his lack of experience and skill as a facilitator and curriculum writer, not to a flaw in the vision. Though he has no way of knowing, he has since wondered what percentage of new educators in similar situations would draw a different conclusion, something like, “Math is different from other subjects. It can’t be learned collaboratively. You just have to memorize.” This experience motivated him to understand why and how math teachers can become effective in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math for Machine Operators. Workplace Education. Instructor’s Guide. Project ALERT.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This instructor’s guide contains materials for a 40-hour course designed to refresh math skills for current computer numerical control machine operators. The course uses two instructional methods: computer-based multimedia and traditional instruction. The course description lists target audience and general objective. The next section gives instructors basic information related to providing successful educational programs in a workplace setting, an instructor’s lexicon of strategies and principles that can be used in teaching, instructor’s role and responsibilities, and course objectives. An explanation of lesson format describes these components of each lesson plan: unit name; lesson name; description and specific goals; objectives; prerequisite skills; technology use; materials needed; teacher to teacher; pretest; posttest; purpose/rationale; procedures/activities; evaluation and extension activities; resources; and homework. A section on planning and scheduling deals with… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Early Academic Outcomes for Students of Part-Time Faculty at Community Colleges: How and Why Does Instructors’ Employment Status Influence Student Success? CCRC Working Paper No. 112

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: More than half of community college courses are taught by part-time faculty, and the reliance on part-time faculty to teach developmental education courses and gateway math and English courses is even more prevalent. Drawing on data from six community colleges, this study estimates the effects of part-time faculty versus full-time faculty on students’ current and subsequent course outcomes in developmental and gateway courses, using course fixed effects and propensity score matching to minimize bias arising from student self-sorting across and within courses. While students with part-time instructors have better outcomes in their current course and similar pass rates in the next course in the sequence, they are 3 to 5 percentage points less likely to enroll in that subsequent course. The negative effects on subsequent enrollment are… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math and Science Instructors’ Perceptions of Their American Indian Students at a Sub-Baccalaureate Technical College: A Delphi Study

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Instructors have long been known to be a major influence on American Indian student success in college, but much is still unknown on exactly how and where this influence exerts itself. Based on the perceptions of math and science instructors at one college of their American Indian students, this article seeks to pinpoint areas where more detailed research on American Indian student success factors appears promising. tandfonline.com – Findings from a Survey of Statistics and Biostatistics Instructors in the Health Sciences Who Teach Using an Online or Flipped Format

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Online and flipped courses are becoming more commonly found across disciplines, including in (bio)-statistics. The literature contains many case studies of instructors reporting on their use of these formats. However, a gap exists in regard to a systematic study of instructors’ implementation of, attitudes on, and recommendations for online or flipped courses in (bio)statistics. We conducted a survey to elicit such responses, and we report here on n = 24 instructors who teach (bio)statistics in the health sciences. These instructors’ courses are described, as well as results summarized for their responses on various aspects of these courses, ranging from the technology they use to whether they would recommend various approaches to teaching colleagues. These findings should be useful… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Technology, Gender Attitude, and Software, among Middle School Math Instructors

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Technology has gained a firm stronghold in society as well as modern classroom. Students are assumed to have a natural aptitude for computers. Over the past decades, educational websites have appeared to be “interactive” and “to make learning fun”. This study employed quantitative method of research using 8th grade instructors from South East Dallas Texas school district. Data was collected via Microsoft Excel and SPSS computation. The survey instrument tested for internal consistency and reliability. The seven Likert scale items tested nine variables for Pearson correlation. A t-test detected non-significance at the p > 0.05 level of probability indicating that male teachers seldom use technology to teach math than their female colleagues. A second t-test showed a significant difference at p < 0.05 level for difference between… Continue Reading
