tandfonline.com – Pluralism in economics: its critiques and their lessons

This paper starts with an evaluation of three common arguments against pluralism in economics: (1) the claim that economics is already pluralist, (2) the argument that if there was the need for greater plurality, it would emerge on its own, and (3) the assertion that pluralism means ‘anything goes’ and is, thus, unscientific. Pluralist responses to all three arguments are summarized. The third argument is shown to relate to a greater challenge for pluralism: an epistemological trade-off between diversity and consensus that suggests moving from a discussion about ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ towards a discussion about the adequate degree of plurality. The paper shows how the trade-off originates from two main challenges: the need to derive adequate quality criteria… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Pedagogy and interdisciplinarity: Research on the reformed kindergarten teacher education (KTE) in Norway

In this paper, the objective is to explore the area of pedagogy in the reform of kindergarten teacher education (KTE), which was implemented in 2013 in Norway. The data material is based on semi-structured interviews with 41 educators from six focus groups, and is analysed with a hermeneutical approach. The main findings is presented in three themes; i) complexity of leadership, ii) professional competition and iii) fragmentation of a subject. The principal conclusion highlights that pedagogy, as a subject, is weakened, unclear and less defined within interdisciplinary education. Implication for leadership in Higher Education Educations (HEI) indicates in general the need for a clarification of the content of the term “pedagogy” and particularly its role in the reformed… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Scaffolding interdisciplinary project-based learning: a case study

Can you ask students from three different bachelor programmes to help solve planning and routeing problems for hospitals? In the presented case an interdisciplinary approach was shown to be successful after some redesign. Students from Applied Mathematics, Civil Engineering and Industrial & Engineering Management jointly designed solutions for ‘traffic’ to and through the hospital using stochastic modelling. Importantly this project was scaffolded through coursework, supervision and problem-design. The particular scaffolding strategy employed by the teaching team offers other teacher teams ideas for making interdisciplinary project-based learning a more effective learning opportunity. At the same time we need to ensure that students feel at home in their own programme and will be empowered to work with other specialists. Link… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Economics between Insulation and Social-Scienciation: Observations by a Sociology of Economics

The intention of the article is to explore trends in economics and sociology, as well as other science disciplines, like history, psychology and anthropology, and investigate the interdisciplinary exchanges that have taken place, leading to convergences and divergences between academic subjects. The “imperialism of economics” is increasingly approaching traditional academic fields of history, psychology, and sociology. However, the article concludes that sociology’s public reputation may have declined, while simultaneously economics is shifting its attention to the social dimension of economic behavior and moving toward the other social sciences; a process which has been coined “social-scienciation.” The argument is that those developments can also be seen as chances to upgrade the social sciences “around” economics. The described process also… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Interdisciplinarity and Indigenous Studies: A Māori Perspective

This paper uses a Māori epistemological approach, to demonstrate why indigenous knowledge systems should be recognised as the ultimate example of interdisciplinary interaction. Over the last 25 years, the library and information professions in New Zealand have become aware of the need to ensure that the full potential of mātauranga Māori is realised. This involves thinking less about ‘Māori studies’, and being more focused on the interaction and integration of the inter-disciplinary components that constitute the totality of mātauranga Māori. Within this context, library and information management institutions are responsible for ensuring that they are able to provide the resources and services required by Māori wishing to draw on knowledge across disciplines, in ways that may ordinarily be seen… Continue Reading
