Instead of deciphering a static response, oral assessments provide instructors the opportunity to probe student explanations, obtaining a more complete picture of their understanding. Moreover, students explaining their conceptual reasoning is advocated in the 2016 GAISE guidelines. Additionally, oral exams allow for flexibility in how students can explain their thinking, potentially helping build students’ identities as statistical thinkers and speakers. Research that focus on “what works” and tiered-models of evidence-based practices may not be well suited for tailoring interventions to support diverse learners. Building from dynamic systems and ecological perspectives of development, this article considers how educational research can be reformed to be responsive to cultural and ecological factors that impact the relevance of educational practices and student outcomes. Research is needed that fosters supported professionalism for teachers and promotes their expertise to use data to adapt interventions to the needs of subgroups. Eric.ed.gov – Meaningful Mathematics: Networking Theories on Multiple Representations and Quantitative Reasoning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper articulates a stance on the study of students’ meaningful mathematics understanding with multiple representations. We integrate Thompson’s theory of quantitative reasoning and Dreyfus’ theory of multiple representations in our approach to frame and conduct empirical investigations of the study of meaningful understanding of function. We provide empirical data to support our approach to examining representational fluency and functional thinking from this networked stance. Our research articulates how the coordination of theories can be productive in informing the design, conduct, and analysis of contexts aimed to understand students’ meaningful math learning with a focus on functional thinking.
