tandfonline.com – Middle Grades Mathematics Teachers’ Mixed Perceptions of Content-Focused Professional Development

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand how and why middle grades mathematics teachers did or did not fully participate in sustained, content-focused professional development. Qualitative data were collected from middle grades teachers who demonstrated varying levels of participation. The teachers identified opportunities to engage in novel ways with mathematics content as effective in improving their own mathematics understanding and, consequently, their own instruction. Participants who were more critical of the professional development felt the mathematics content was often beyond their specific grade-level. Factors identified as affecting teachers’ participation in the training included administrative support and school-related responsibilities. Offering content-focused professional development designed to reflect the structures and characteristics established in research to most effectively provide teachers… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Using critical race mixed methodology to explore the experiences of African Americans in education

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The goal of this article is to explore the relationship between a researcher’s inquiry worldview and methodological choices. In the analysis, I explicate my own racialized positionality and Critical Race Theory (CRT) inquiry worldview. Also, I explain my use of critical race mixed methodology (CRMM), the combining of CRT and mixed methods. In doing so, I give specific examples from my program of research. The discussion ends by my providing implications for conducting CRMM in educational psychology. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Missing Data and Mixed Results: The Effects of Teach For America on Student Achievement Revisited

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper revisits existing experimental work on Teach For America (TFA) and extends it by examining treatment effects across the distribution of student achievement. TFA is a rapidly expanding teacher preparation program that currently serves over half a million students in low-income districts across the country. Previous research results did not have notable variation by subgroup. Estimates were inaccurate due to the treatment of a non-response code as a valid response value. Revised estimates confirm positive effects for math and not reading, but show that TFA teachers were especially effective for African American students, but not Hispanics, and for females, but not males. In addition to examining differences across subgroup, others have argued that a distributional approach is important for thoroughly investigating policy interventions because examinations focused… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – MIXED: Educational Perspectives from Families of Mixed East and West Educational Background

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Will my children’s creativity be hindered if I place them within the rigidity of an East Asian school? Conversely, could my children’s math and science skills benefit from the high expectations of an East Asian curriculum and teacher? The purpose of this study is two-fold. Firstly, it aims to demonstrate that comparison between Eastern and Western educational traditions can be framed in terms of a dialectic concerning students’ development, autonomy, learning environment, and curricula. Secondly, it is to analyze the substance and effects of this dialectic in the context of 15 families of mixed educational background situated between Eastern and Western educational traditions. These families in Hong Kong have access to educational opportunities for their children in adherence to educational styles associated with either Eastern or Western… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Educational trajectories of immigrant-origin youths in Finland: a mixed methods analysis

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article examines the educational trajectories envisioned by immigrant-origin youths. The mixed-methods research draws upon quantitative (N = 445) and interview data (n = 112). Whereas most prior research focuses on educational achievement or educational attainment of immigrant-origin youth, this article focuses on their outlooks concerning education and occupation. We determined the educational and career aspirations and expectations immigrant-origin youths have and in the ways their aspirations differ from those of Finnish-origin youths. We also seek to discover how this possible aspiration paradox is reflected in the trajectories envisioned by immigrant-origin youths. We confirm earlier findings showing that immigrant-origin youths have both a strong belief in education and the will to achieve success in tertiary-level education. We also argue for diversity of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Visual Thinking Routines: A Mixed Methods Approach Applied to Student Teachers at the American University in Dubai

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Visual thinking routines are principles based on several theories, approaches, and strategies. Such routines promote thinking skills, call for collaboration and sharing of ideas, and above all, make thinking and learning visible. Visual thinking routines were implemented in the teaching methodology graduate course at the American University in Dubai. The following study used mixed methods. It was guided by two research questions: 1) To what extent did visual thinking routines implemented in the Math/Science methodology course offered at the Graduate School of Education at the American University in Dubai inspire learning in the classroom and made time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking? 2) How do visual thinking routines inspire learning in the classroom and make time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking? Eight student teachers enrolled… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Mixed Methods Evaluation of Statewide Implementation of Mathematics Education Technology for K-12 Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: An extensive body of research has demonstrated that the use in a K-12 classroom of technology, such as the Internet, computers, and software programs, enhances the learning of mathematics (Cheung & Slavin, 2013; Cohen & Hollebrands, 2011). In particular, growing empirical evidence supports that certain types of technology, such as intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning systems, have a positive impact on students’ academic achievement in math and their attitudes toward math (Arroyo, Burleson, Tai, Muldner, & Woolf, 2013; Ma, Adesope, Nesbit, & Liu, 2014; Pane, Griffin, McCaffrey, & Karam, 2013; Steenbergen-Hu & Cooper, 2013). These kinds of learning systems yield positive effects by providing students with personalized instruction tailored to “the pace, order, location, and content of a lesson uniquely for each student” (Enyedy, 2014, p.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Textbooks are the only available source/s of teaching and learning English in Pakistani public education system. Whether the textbooks serve their intended purposes as mentioned in the National Curriculum of English, the researchers conducted a mixed methods teachers’-led evaluation to investigate the effectiveness of English textbooks. The study aimed to understand how Pakistani government primary school teachers in the province of Balochistan view the English textbooks of Grades 1–5 and what impacts the effectiveness of the English textbooks. Using an exploratory sequential design, the researchers first recruited 188 government teachers for survey in quantitative part of the study and later selected 12 participants from those who completed the survey for semi-structured interviews in qualitative part of the study.… Continue Reading
