Eric.ed.gov – On Their Own: Students’ Responses to Open-Ended Questions in Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies. Results of the 1990 Assessment: Grade Four, Grade Eight, Grade Twelve.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In the spring of 1990, over 9,000 4th-, 8th- and 12th-grade students (only 6 percent of all students in Massachusetts) were assessed using open-ended mathematical, scientific, social studies, and reading concepts. Beginning with the Massachusetts Educational Assessment Program for 1992, open-ended questions will be administered to all students and will contribute to school and district scores. This series of reports describes the results of these assessments to communicate levels of student achievement throughout the state, familiarize teachers and administrators with the types of questions that will be included on the next assessment; and improve assessments taking place within classrooms by providing models that teachers can adapt to their own evaluations of students’ knowledge, understanding, and abilities. Fifteen handouts for grade 4, 17 handouts for grade 8, and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – You Asked Open-Ended Questions, Now What? Understanding the Nature of Stumbling Blocks in Teaching Inquiry Lessons

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Undergraduate preservice teachers face many challenges implementing inquiry pedagogy in mathematics lessons. This study provides a step-by-step case analysis of an undergraduate preservice teacher’s actions and responses while teaching an inquiry lesson during a summer math camp for grade 3-6 students conducted at a university. Stumbling blocks that hindered achievement of the overall goals of the inquiry lesson emerged when the preservice teacher asked open-ended questions and learners gave diverse, unexpected responses. Because no prior thought was given to possible student answers, the preservice teacher was not equipped to give pedagogically meaningful responses to her students. Often, the preservice teacher simply ignored the unanticipated responses, impeding the students’ meaning-making attempts. Based on emergent stumbling blocks observed, this study recommends that teacher educators focus novice teacher preparation in… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Open-Ended Tasks in the Promotion of Classroom Communication in Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics programmes in basic education are currently undergoing reform in Portugal. This paper sets out to see how teachers are putting the new guidelines for the teaching of mathematics into practice, with particular emphasis on maths communication in the classroom. To achieve this, an experiment in teaching the topic “Sequences and Regularities” with open-ended tasks, using a qualitative and interpretative approach, is reported. Data were collected during two class observations, from two interviews and by analysing the activities of the students. An exploratory task was chosen in the first lesson and a investigative one in the second. One month separated the two lessons, and during this time the teacher read and discussed texts on mathematics communication. Observation of the first lesson showed that the communication in the… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Exploring points of contact between enterprise education and open-ended investigations in science education

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Enterprise education is a policy-driven, cross-curricular phenomenon on many Western countries’ educational agendas. The expectation is that it will be implemented in different school subjects, but bridging enterprise education and different school subjects has proven to be a challenge. This article explores whether and how open-ended investigations in science education in secondary schools can be viewed as a form of enterprise education. We identify several points of contact, illuminating the premises on which enterprise education can be integrated into science education. Thus, the results contribute to the under-researched field of bridging enterprise education with school subjects in secondary education. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Characteristics of Teacher Knowledge Produced by Preservice Mathematics Teachers: The Case of Open-Ended Problem-Based Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: One major issue in mathematics teacher education regards the role of university-level mathematics in teacher knowledge. In the context of a design-based research project, an advanced mathematics teacher education course aimed at strengthening the connections between university-level mathematics and school mathematics was developed. In this paper, I present a case study, conducted within the education course, in which I analyse the characteristics of teacher knowledge produced by five small groups of pre-service teachers in an open-ended problem-based learning task. The results indicate the problem-based learning approach has the potential for enhancing specialised content knowledge such as knowledge of different representations of and applications of mathematical concepts. The results also highlight the challenges in using this approach for enhancing horizon content knowledge such as knowledge about the relationships… Continue Reading
