ABSTRACT Physical closure of educational institutes worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the emergence of a new era of video-based learning. The current circumstances are unique that have forced students to use digital technologies for their learning purpose. However, the successful usage of such a system relies on the understanding of the adoption factors, for which an integrated model is proposed based on the Technology Acceptance Model and the Task Technology Fit Model. Additionally, this work… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Analysis of the intended mathematics curriculum revision process in Mozambique from the perspective of relevance

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The local needs and circumstances in curriculum revision often necessitate improvements in the quality of education. However, problems associated with the revision of curricula in developing countries have been observed from a range of perspectives in previous studies. This study investigates the revision process of the intended mathematics curriculum in Mozambique through document analysis of related materials and interviews with people involved in the 2015 curriculum revision. The investigation revealed three points. First, the results of nationwide surveys on academic ability conducted by the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MEHD) as well as interviews of parents and teacher questionnaires significantly affected the curriculum-revision process. Second, aligned with the political regulations, opinions from various social and economic groups… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Knowledge in the school subject of physical education: a Bernsteinian perspective

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this conceptual article is to explore how Bernstein’s concepts can further our understanding of the internal structure of knowledge informing physical education (PE) and the transmission of knowledge from its site of production into the school subject. In the process of constructing a school subject, knowledge is chosen and decontextualised from where it is produced and then recontextualised into the pedagogic context. This process involves a subjective selection of what is valued as important knowledge. That which is stipulated in the curriculum is regarded as legitimate knowledge worth transmitting to the younger generation. This article offers a deepened understanding of the organising principles of knowledge and the transformation of knowledge into the recontextualised field… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Neuroscience and educational practice – A critical assessment from the perspective of philosophy of science

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The aim of this paper is to reconstruct and critically assess the evidential relationship between neuroscience and educational practice. To do this, I reconstruct a standard way in which evidence from neuroscience is used to support recommendations about educational practice, that is, testing pedagogical interventions using neuroimaging methods, and discuss and critically assess the inference behind this approach. I argue that this inference rests on problematic assumptions, and, therefore, that neuroimaging intervention studies have no special evidential status for basing educational practice. I conclude arguing that these limitations could be resolved by integrating evidence from neurocognitive and educational science. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Nudges against pandemics: Sweden’s COVID-19 containment strategy in perspective

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Sweden’s strategy to contain the COVID-19 pandemic stands out internationally as more liberal in terms of not ordering a complete lockdown of society. Sweden kept its primary schools, daycare centers and industries largely open. The government financially supported furloughed workers and increased its support to regional and local governments delivering healthcare and elderly care. However, the death toll in Sweden which passed 4000 by late May 2020 stands in stark contrast to those of other, comparable countries, raising questions about the design of the strategy, and its appropriateness. The paper argues that key assumptions sustaining the strategy, for instance that symptom-free people do not carry, and cannot transmit the Coronavirus, or that local and regional government staff had… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – A preschool for all children? – Swedish preschool teachers’ perspective on inclusion

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Building on the Salamanca Statement from 1994, the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals 2030 embraces inclusion for children in early childhood education. The European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education in 2015–2017 completed a project on inclusive early childhood education, focusing on structures, processes, and outcomes that ensure a systemic approach to high-quality Inclusive Early Childhood Education (IECE). An ecosystem model of IECE was developed with a self-reflection tool for improving inclusion. This study’s aim was to investigate practitioners’ perspective on the inclusive processes and supportive structures defined in the ecosystem model, to contribute to a deeper understanding of how inclusive practice might be enabled and how barriers for inclusion can be removed. The self-reflection tool was… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Control and agency in student–teacher relations: a cross–cultural perspective on Finnish and Korean comprehensive schools

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Drawing on a cross-cultural, qualitative study in Finnish and Korean comprehensive schools, we explore how teacher control and student agency are manifested and exercised in the teaching and learning practices of the “official school” and in the student–teacher interactions of the “informal school”. We also elaborate on how students reflect on control and agency. Bernstein’s concepts of framing and classification are employed as a theoretical lens with which to examine control, agency and hierarchy. Data consists of school observations and interviews with students aged 12 to 14 and their teachers, conducted in six schools. The findings indicate that student agency is intensively constrained in their participation in teaching-learning practices. The analysis also reveals a paradox where students do… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Analysing the constitution of trust in peer-based teacher mentoring groups – a sociocultural perspective

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Trust is essential in any kind of peer-based mentoring. Taking a sociocultural view, this study focuses on how trust emerges relationally in a higher education context where colleagues observe and give feedback on one another’s teaching. The term peer mentoring refers here to a collaborative approach in which faculty staff observe and give feedback on one another’s teaching. The data in the study draw on video observations of and interviews with a four-member (senior faculty) peer group observed over a 5-month period. The analysis of the group interactions shows how the members made themselves vulnerable during peer review and reveals the implication of trust in this collaborative setting. The sociocultural perspective draws here attention to the key role… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Bridging Science Education’s Theory–Practice Divide: A Perspective from Teacher Education Through Topic-Specific PCK

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. The divide between theory and practice is an enduring challenge commonly attributed to disconnection in teacher knowledge between ‘knowing what to do’ (planning) and ‘doing what you know’ (enacting in class). We re-visited this divide from the new perspective of pedagogical content knowledge with the purpose of examining the ways in which topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge (TSPCK), evident in a planning-to-teach setting, translates in a classroom setting. Furthermore, we aimed to identify the factors that influence the translation. We… Continue Reading
