Abstract Historically, the introductory course in statistics at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), has taken a traditional, lecture-based form. A previous study at NMBU concluded that the course structure appeared to disfavor certain cognitive or personality types, extraverts in particular. Therefore, in 2016, as an experiment, the course was restructured into a student active learning course following a flipped classroom approach. At the same time, students were encouraged to do an online screening test for cognitive preferences,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Innovations in Math/Science Teacher Education: A New Population; A Revised Training Agenda.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A special program was initiated in 1985 at George Washington University to encourage persons from other careers to pursue a second career in teaching in the Washington D.C. area. This report describes the variables that had to be and are continuing to be considered in the design of this training effort for mid-career professionals. Factors considered include: (1) difference in the culture of the school and the environment of the first career; (2) developmental process of learning; (3) the educated consumer and teacher education; (4) the attributes and experiences of the career population; (5) match between the mid-career professional and the level and age of the student population; (6) certification is critical, the degree is not; and (7) part-time student/full-time professional. Perspectives are also offered on reform… Continue Reading

Abstract The use of meta-heuristic methods for solving nonlinear engineering and optimization problems is one of the paramount topics that attracted the attention of the researchers. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is an optimization algorithm which has inspired by birds flocking. However, like other methods, PSO has some disadvantages such as problems in finding the best global minimum or trapping in the local minima in some special problems. In some works, the initial particles are randomly set using uniform or… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Impact of the Great Recession on Student Achievement: Evidence from Population Data. CEPA Working Paper No. 17-09

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Great Recession was the most severe economic downturn in the United States since the Great Depression. Using newly available population-level achievement data from the Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA), we estimate the impact of the Great Recession on the math and English language arts (ELA) achievement of all grade 3-8 students in the United States. Employing a difference-in-differences strategy that leverages both cross-district variation in the economic shock of the recession and within-district, cross-cohort variation in school-age years of exposure to the recession, we find that the onset of the Great Recession significantly reduced student math and ELA achievement. Moreover, the recessionary effect on student achievement was concentrated among school districts serving more economically disadvantaged and minority students, indicating that the adverse effects of the recession… Continue Reading

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Following a modeling-first approach to differential equations, inquiry-based learning activities on modeling and controlling the growth of locally relevant species, such as lionfish or sea turtles, are developed by the authors. Emerging exemplary practices are presented, building towards a balanced teaching of differential equations involving multiple mathematical perspectives, representations, and intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary mathematical connections. This innovative approach is an effort towards realizing the MAA’s Common Vision for Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences programs in 2025. Discrete and continuous approaches… Continue Reading

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Sample survey design is a topic usually taught to students undertaking a minor or major in statistics in the latter part of their bachelor’s degree. This article describes an assessment project that fosters active learning and helps to develop a set of essential skills for statistical practice. The project is completed in pairs and submitted in two parts. This allows feedback from the first part to be acted upon for the second part. Ideally, students would gain experience… Continue Reading
