tandfonline.com – A validity perspective on interviews as a selection mechanism for entry to initial teacher education programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Across the world, teacher quality has come to be recognised as one of the most important variables affecting student outcomes; consequently, the regulation of entry into the profession is the subject of iterative review. The traditional ‘one-off’ interview, involving an interviewee and two or more interviewers, is a common, but not unproblematic, selection mechanism in the field. In particular, the modest positive correlation between performance at interviews and in clinical settings raises questions about using interviews as a selection mechanism for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes. In this paper, we draw on validity theory and some key commentaries and studies in the research literature to offer a perspective on the extent to which the traditional interview provides data… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Knowledge capital theory: a critical analysis using Lakatos’ idea of research programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper introduces and uses Lakatos’ idea of research programmes to summarise and critically evaluate academic discourse towards knowledge capital theory. The analysis uses rational reconstruction to formulate the components of the hardcore and protective belt of knowledge capital theory. By critically surveying the literature, it challenges the validity of the claims made by Erik Hanushek, Ludger Woessmann and the OECD that there is a causal link between cognitive development and economic growth. It concludes by stating that knowledge capital theory in its current form is degenerate and should be considered a high-risk research programme and that more sophisticated theories are required to be developed to explain current phenomena. ABSTRACT Teacher education is of vital importance for what teachers are capable to do for their pupils, but little is known about student teachers’ pedagogical knowledge. The Didaktik and the curriculum traditions are two main education approaches underpinning formal schooling and teacher education programmes (TEPs) in the Western world. The main difference between the two traditions lies in the content and objectives of teacher education, which are either theoretical or action-oriented. Two questions are addressed quantitatively: How do teacher… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Trial with academic elite programmes in the comprehensive upper-secondary education in Sweden: a case study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Sweden has a long tradition of comprehensive upper-secondary education. This began in the early 1970s. It culminated in 1994 with all the programmes having a core curriculum that gave general eligibility to higher education. Conservative and liberal governments have introduced several neoliberal school reforms, which the subsequent social democratic government has done little or nothing to change. In 2009, the government initiated a trial with academic elite programmes. The aim of this article is to analyse how and why the elite programmes translated into and transformed local school practices as they did. The study builds on interview and questionnaire data from school principals, university teachers, upper-secondary teachers and students involved in the programmes that started in 2010, and… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Expectancy-value theory as an explanatory theory for the effect of professional development programmes in formative assessment on teacher practice

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Research has identified characteristics of professional development programmes (PDPs) that are important for accomplishing change in teachers’ practice and student achievement. However, these characteristics do not predict and guarantee the outcomes of a specific PDP. In the present study the authors investigated whether the expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation can be used to explain teachers’ change of practice. Through teacher interviews and questionnaires the authors investigated why randomly selected year-7 teachers, after participating in a PDP on formative assessment, changed their practice in ways identified in an earlier study, and why these changes differed from those of year-4 teachers participating in a similar PDP. The results show that expectancy-value theory can be used to explain both the schoolyear-7… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Active learning engagement in teacher preparation programmes – A comparative study from Qatar, Lebanon and China

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study investigated student teachers’ preferred active learning strategies, and those which they actually received during their teacher preparation programmes. An explanatory mixed methods research design was adopted, including a survey completed by 308 participants and group interviews involving 38 participants. Data were gathered from student teachers completing their university education in three countries: Qatar, Lebanon, and China. Results indicated the prevalence of and a preference for a passive mode of instruction among student teachers as a convenient approach that would guarantee good grades from assessment procedures favouring memorization. Further, several inconsistencies between the quantitative and qualitative data revealed challenges in reconciling the theory-practice gap, changing perceptions towards alternative teacher roles, and realigning assessment procedures with innovative teaching… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – “When there is a book to stick to”: teacher professionalism and manual-based programmes in two Swedish early childhood education settings

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT With focus on teachers’ experiences and understandings of manual-based programmes, this article explores the implications for teacher professionalism. It locates teachers’ use of manual-based programmes in the intersection of two currents of ideas in contemporary society and within education: therapy culture and the evidence movement. The article builds on material from interviews with teachers and participant-observation in a kindergarten and a preschool class in the Swedish educational system where programmes for the development of children’s social and emotional learning were used – programmes developed by external expertise, claiming the programmes to have a solid evidence base. These were initially implemented from above in the educational system, but as shown, embraced from within professional culture as means to perform… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Gender and choice: differentiating options in Swedish upper secondary STEM programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The extensive reforms of Sweden’s education system during the last few decades have resulted in deregulation and individualization of schools. In upper secondary education, a distinct flexible course structure with multiple options was introduced in order to enhance school effectiveness and equity. This study departs in some of the previously outlined tensions in educational research between market interests and a ‘free choice discourse’ in relation to processes of differentiation. The purpose of this article is to investigate the ways gender patterns may be reproduced in relation to the emergence of multiple options and the re-organization of subject matters within Swedish upper secondary science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Our case addresses relations between discourses of choice and… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Lets diversify by changing culture and challenging stereotypes: a case study from professional construction higher education programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The UK construction sector is not diverse and is reputed to be dangerous, dirty, physically demanding and non-professional. Young people often regard construction jobs as a last resort. Yet there is a growing skills shortage that needs to attract greater diversity of applicants. The aim of the BRIDGE (Building Routes Into Degrees with Greater Equality) project was to improve the number and diversity of entrants to professional construction higher education programmes. An in-depth assessment of the current situation informed a theory of change, and identified seven interrelated themes to tackle this. This case study is focused on the recruitment theme. Using action research, imagery/wording used in student recruitment was updated and staff undertook equality, diversity and inclusion training.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Do they match? Prospective students’ experiences with choosing university programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT When transitioning from high school to university, young people must choose a programme that fits them. We argue that prospective students who can test this fit before starting the programme, will make a better choice. We propose an integrated framework where testing person-environment fit on ability beliefs, interests and sense of belonging possibly contributes to making the right choice. Dutch matching procedures are supposed to serve as a fit-test for prospective students choosing a university programme. 61 prospective students at four Dutch universities were interviewed on the role of matching in their programme choice. Different elements of matching appear to allow for testing fit but vary in which aspects of fit can be tested and the impact they… Continue Reading
