Program features include: pre-assessment of pupil speed and accuracy, automatic placement of the pupil in appropriate problems for practice, automatic monitoring of pupil performance, and automatic adjustment of practice problems. Field testing was undertaken with junior and senior high students with learning disabilities as well as with grade 4-5 students without disabilities. This was the third year of funding and implementation of this grant, which provided summer school funds with emphasis in building literacy through the use of mathematics and science. The model consisted of eight major components: pretests/posttests, diagnostic evaluations, domain directories, software matrix, software summaries, skill sheets, computer software, and miscellaneous materials. The model was evaluated by comparing math performance and attitudes of students who received instruction based on the model with those of matched control students, and by conducting interviews with teachers using the model. Analysis of scores of 26 experimental and 26 comparison subjects on the 9th-grade Maryland Functional Mathematics Test indicated that 27% of experimental subjects passed the test, while 12% of the comparison students passed. It responds to a need to improve mathematics learning in the Mid-Atlantic Region (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC). Findings reveal that the type of instructional activity taking place in intervention schools differed from that in control schools, and the activity observed in intervention schools was the type expected when implementing CMP2.
