Eric.ed.gov – In the National Interest: The Federal Government in the Reform of K-12 Math and Science Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report is about the serious shortcomings in U.S. math and science education, and what the federal government can and should do in order to play a much more effective role in the national effort to remedy those shortcomings. The task force responsible for this document believes that math and science education should receive priority attention as a specific focus area in federal pre-college education reform initiatives. However, math and science educational improvement must be undertaken in the context of systemic reform of K-12 education as a whole: teacher capability and diversity, school structure and management, and student motivation. Federal programs in general school reform and in math and science education should be concurrent, coordinated efforts. Sections include the following: (1) “The Social Context for a Federal… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Cost-Effectiveness of Comprehensive School Reform and Rapid Assessment

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Analysis of the cost-effectiveness of 29 Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) models suggests that all 29 models are less cost-effective than an alternative approach for raising student achievement, involving rapid assessment systems that test students 2 to 5 times per week in math and reading and provide rapid feedback of the results to students and teachers. Results suggest that reading and math achievement could increase approximately one order of magnitude greater for every dollar invested in rapid assessment rather than CSR. The results also suggest that reading and math achievement could increase two orders of magnitude for every dollar invested in rapid assessment rather than class size reduction and three orders of magnitude for every dollar invested in rapid assessment rather than high quality preschool. Eric.ed.gov – Facing Equity: Facing Ourselves. Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article discusses the issue of defining and facing equity elementary mathematics classrooms. It is argued that teachers have difficulty facing the fact of inequity in classrooms and that a deep conversation about equity is often avoided because many people are uncomfortable with disagreement. Two strategies for promoting in-depth dialogue about equity are presented. It is concluded that educators must confront their personal beliefs and examine how they are affecting students’ lives and student performance. (MM) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Home-School Connections. Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This stand-alone workshop session explores the connections between home and school mathematics learning through the lens of equity. It is appropriate for use with teachers, staff developers, after-school program providers, and other educators who work with parents. All three session activities can be done, or the leader can opt to keep the session to one hour by doing the first activity, “Who Are the Parents and Caregivers?”, and then choosing either “Promoting Math Interactions at Home” or “Math Messages” and the videotape “What Are You Teaching My Child?” (Includes blackline masters, details of activities, and handouts.) Eric.ed.gov – Toward Instructional Reform in the Math Classroom: A Teacher’s Process of Change.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The reform movement in mathematics education calls for students to engage in problem solving, to discuss and communicate their thinking, and to develop meaningful understandings. This paper reports a case study of a fourth-grade class in line with the reform call, emphasizing the process of change the teacher experienced and the support she needed. The teacher in this study taught mathematics using the Cognitively Guided Instruction approach. Observations, interviews, and student assessments were collected. Reported are four phases of teacher change: (1) the teacher’s teaching and thinking at the beginning of the study; (2) learning, thinking, and stimulating the process of change; (3) learning from and helping individuals; and (4) building on children’s thinking in instruction. Contains 25 references. (MKR) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Why Understanding 1-3/4 divided by 1/2 Matters to Math Reform: ABE Teachers Learn the Math They Teach.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper explains the investigative attempts of The New York City Math Exchange Group (MEG) on elementary mathematics teachers’ content knowledge in Adult Basic Education (ABE). The study is comparative in nature and took place in a workshop at the Adults Learning Maths Conference in Boston. The new members of the MEG professional development group were compared to the veteran members. It is observed that among the experienced MEG members, the ability to compute a division problem, create story problems, and reason mathematically and abstractly were higher than in other studies of U.S. teachers and the sample of new MEG members. It is concluded that it is only through comprehensive and ongoing staff development that all teachers can better understand, apply, and teach mathematics to their students.… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Equity Resource Guide: Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This resource guide presents information on gender equity in mathematics education reform. The project focuses on how issues of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and language play out in the elementary reform math classroom. The guide is specifically geared toward staff developers and teachers who are implementing new mathematics curricula. The five sections are: (1) an annotated list of relevant research articles and books (education reform, learning patterns, overview, parents, pedagogy, psychology, and strategies for achieving equity); (2) an annotated list of organizations and projects of interest (Internet, CD-ROM, and video); (3) an annotated list of relevant Web sites and other electronic sources; (4) equity tools; and (5) a listing of equity workshops around the country. This guide is a work in progress, with additional sections coming in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Weathering the perfect policy storm: a case study of municipal responses to educational reform surges in Sweden

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Global trends inspired by neo-liberal tendencies have influenced developments in the Swedish school system. A flurry of educational reforms over the last decades have rapidly transformed the municipal school arena into a market in which independent, for-profit schools have expanded and school segregation has increased. This article examines municipal responses to these reforms using the theoretical framework of policy enactment. More specifically, the genesis of Maple Grove secondary school in a Swedish municipality is analysed by taking contextual factors into account. These include reform and results pressure, inspections, teacher shortages and unexpected factors such as a large influx of refugees. These factors are traced to gain insights into how municipalities weather what can be described as a perfect… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Money and Freedom: The Impact of California’s School Finance Reform on Academic Achievement and the Composition of District Spending. Technical Report. Getting Down to Facts II

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: California’s recent major school finance reform, the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), attempts to address resource inequity by reallocating school finances on the basis of student disadvantage (rather than district property wealth) and relinquishing many of the restrictions on how revenue can be spent. Beyond a uniform “base grant” given to all districts, the LCFF reallocates additional district revenues based almost entirely on the proportion of disadvantaged students (e.g., low-income, limited English proficiency) in each district. We show LCFF significantly increased per-pupil spending, and the state now has among the most progressive funding formulas in the country. This study is among the first to provide evidence of LCFF’s impacts on student outcomes. For cohorts born between 1990 and 2000, we constructed a school-by-cohort-level panel data set of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – What Is Equity? A Look into a Reform Math Classroom. Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform project at TERC has created a two- hour workshop session on equity in the standards-based mathematics classroom that is appropriate for use as a professional development tool with teachers, staff developers, after-school program providers, and other educators who work with parents. “What is Equity?” can be used as a stand-alone workshop or as part of an extended in- service training program for teachers and administrators. This session is intended to address equity related issues that surface in standards-based reform mathematics classrooms. Issues of teacher and student learning are also addressed along with discussions around specific equity issues that participants face in their school and classroom environments. The beginning of the session asks participants to reflect on their own experiences in… Continue Reading
