A key objective is to encourage colleges to improve retention and academic success for students, particularly the substantial numbers who arrive unprepared for college-level work. Specifically, the VCCS seeks to improve the rates at which underprepared students complete developmental coursework and advance to take and pass college courses, particularly the initial college-level, or “gatekeeper,” math and English offerings. It presents two tools developed for use in assessing remedial mathematics teaching: (1) the “Effective Remedial Mathematics Checklist,” for use in supervising teachers of remedial math, and (2) the “Math Remediation Methods Questionnaire (MRMQ),” designed to assess what teachers, as a group, know about effective remediation in mathematics. Information is presented on the theoretical background, test development, test administration, scoring, and analysis. Eric.ed.gov – Math Word Problem Remediation with Elementary Students.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report describes a program for improving elementary school students ability to solve mathematical word problems. The targeted population consisted of primary, middle, and junior high students attending two different kindergarten through eighth grade schools. Both schools were located within blue collar neighborhoods in a large metropolitan area. Students’ weakness in the area of problem solving was documented by teacher-made tests, journaling, standardized test scores, student surveys, and teacher surveys. Research literature and measurement tools revealed the following probable causes: inability to read story problems adequately; poor reading ability in general; improper strategy use; lack of strategy use; lack of desire to properly understand mathematical logic of problem; strategies that rely on memorization; insufficient instructional time spent on problem solving; and inadequate time spent on finding solutions.… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Corequisite Remediation in Mathematics: A Review of First-Year Implementation and Outcomes of Quantway and Statway

Increasingly, students who would have been required to take, and succeed in, developmental coursework before enrolling in college-level courses are now being placed directly into those courses while also receiving remedial support. This approach — known as developmental corequisite remediation — pairs a college-level course with a corequisite course designed to help students succeed in the college-level work.
