eric.ed.gov har udgivet: An attempt to meet the need for resource materials available for Adult Basic Education (ABE) personnel who work with Spanish-speaking adults is presented. The information presented was acquired by writing to commercial publishers throughout the country. Evaluations included were completed by identifying the usefulness of the curricular offerings for Spanish-speaking adults. Portions of the evaluations are designed for children and junior and senior high school students; some of these have proven useful to adults. Evaluative criteria used when the materials were assessed include: Title, Author, Publisher, Objectives, Criterion Measures, Instructional Components, Learner Prerequisite, Teacher Requirements, Reliability Effect, Cost and Time. Eric.ed.gov – MendelWeb: An Electronic Science/Math/History Resource for the WWW.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes a hypermedia resource, called MendelWeb that integrates elementary biology, discrete mathematics, and the history of science. MendelWeb is constructed from Gregor Menders 1865 paper, “Experiments in Plant Hybridization”. An English translation of Mendel’s paper, which is considered to mark the birth of classical and evolutionary genetics, is presented as an active document, with links to traditional reference material (e.g. glossaries, biographies, and the original German text) as well as images, tutorials, active commentaries, related Web sites, and animations. Users can choose to view any of several versions of the Mendel paper, each featuring different degrees of activity and annotation, and MendelWeb is designed to be accessible and useful to those running basic text browsers like Lynx, as well as full-featured browsers like Mosaic. MendelWeb,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math Notes. The Clipboard Connection. Chapter I Resource Center Curriculum and Instruction.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The “Clipboard Connection” is a methodology to facilitate the rapid circulation of relevant pre-existing materials from Chapter 1 Technical Assistance Centers of relevant materials from Chapter 1 Technical Assistance Centers (TACs) to their clients, teachers of educationally disadvantaged children in resource centers. Each “Clipboard Connection” consists of a lead sheet summarizing the contents of the materials (reprints of journal articles, brochures, etc.) to be distributed, and the materials themselves. This compilation focuses on techniques for effective mathematics instruction. The following reprints are included: (1) “Teaching Mathematics and Thinking,” prepared by Edward A. Silver and Margaret S. Smith (Arithmetic Teacher, volume 37, number 8, April 1990); (2) “Using Writing Activities to Reinforce Mathematics Instruction,” by David M. Davison and Daniel L. Pearce (Arithmetic Teacher, volume 35, number 8,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Engaging Parents in Education: Lessons from Five Parental Information and Resource Centers. Innovations in Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Children benefit academically when parents and educators work together. For this reason, parents’ involvement in their children’s education is a priority of the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.” But a strong connection between parents and educators does not come about automatically. Both parties may need to learn new roles and skills and develop the confidence to use them, especially as parents move beyond traditional activities, like helping children with homework, and toward shared responsibility for school improvement. Intermediary organizations, like federally funded Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs), can help. Drawing on lessons learned from five PIRCs across the country that have been meeting this challenge, this guide shares promising strategies for increasing effective parent involvement. It explains “how to” strategies that the Parent Information… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform: Equity Resource Guide. [2001 Edition].

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Many of the National Science Foundation-funded math curricula offer (or will be offering) staff development workshops to accompany the adoption of the curricula in schools and districts. While much of this staff development focuses on providing teachers with a solid grounding in the mathematical content of the curricula, an opportunity exists within these efforts to incorporate equity in a substantive way. As part of the Weaving Gender Equity into Math Reform project, we hope to provide teachers, administrators, staff developers, and others with the tools to implement themes and practices related to equity in their professions. Our project is focusing on how issues of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and language play out in the elementary reform math classroom. We plan to capitalize on staff development geared toward… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Decimals and Percents. Math in Action. Teacher’s Guide & Resource and Duplicatable Blackline WorkMasters.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is the teacher’s guide to an easy-to-read, slower paced mathematics text designed for students who have learning, reading, and language problems. Basic concepts and skills about decimals and percents, including computation with decimals and using proportions to solve percent problems, are presented. All 10 units begin with a brief discussion of how decimals or percents are used in real life. Lessons teach only one major concept on each page, and include comprehension exercises. Sixty-five duplicatable, blackline master worksheets are included in the teacher’s guide. They are organized to correspond with the student’s workbook. Teaching suggestions are briefly presented, as are notes for each page. An answer key for the student’s workbook is included. Comments on teaching students with special needs are also presented. Eric.ed.gov – Word Problems. Math in Action. Teacher’s Guide & Resource.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This teacher’s guide was designed to accompany five student workbooks: Math Language, Understanding Word Problems, Using a Calculator, Estimation, and Solving Word Problems. The series was specifically developed for low achieving students. The teaching gradually progresses in difficulty, but concepts are presented in small chunks that students can successfully handle. Questions within the text repeatedly involve the students’ attention, and their learning is checked and reviewed within each lesson. Word problem situations reflect mathematical problems that students would actually do. Following suggestions for how to present and use the workbooks, the guide contains over 200 blackline master worksheets. A description at the bottom of each page states the concept being developed, and the corresponding unit and page in the student’s workbook. Separate introductions are provided for each… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Enrichment Opportunities Guide. A Resource for Teachers and Students in Math and Science.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This guide was developed for two purposes: to enrich science and mathematics programs in schools and to encourage the professional growth of teachers of science and mathematics. A basic premise behind the development of this guide is that all students should have a variety of learning experiences, especially students in categorical programs such as Chapter 1, bilingual, migrant, and other compensatory education programs. These students should see that the study of science is not confined to the classroom but offers a way to investigate and understand the curious phenomena to be found in the every-day world. Similarly, mathematics is not only the scientist’s primary tool but also a world of its own full of curious phenomena. This publication lists contests and fairs for individuals and teams; extracurricular… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Accommodating Students with Disabilities in Math and Science Classes: A Resource for Teachers [and Videotape].

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This kit is designed to help science and mathematics teachers become more aware of the rights, responsibilities, potential contribution, and needs of students with disabilities, teachers’ responsibilities for ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students in their programs, and strategies for accommodating students who have disabilities in science and math classes. Material includes a notebook, a 2-hour videotape recording, and informational handouts and a pamphlet on the DO-IT (Disabilities Opportunities Internetworking Technology) program. The “Background and General Strategies” section of the notebook covers general issues related to access to education for individuals with disabilities, and legal and attitudinal issues as well as general teaching strategies. The”Computing Access” section covers the three areas that must be addressed in order to provide full access to computing resources (computer lab… Continue Reading
