Abstract We developed and tested strategies for using spatial representations to help students understand core probability concepts, including the multiplication rule for computing a joint probability from a marginal and conditional probability, interpreting an odds value as the ratio of two probabilities, and Bayesian inference. The general goal of these strategies is to promote active learning by introducing concepts in an intuitive spatial format and then encouraging students to try to discover the explicit equations associated with the spatial… Continue Reading

ABSTRACT In spite of the fact that labour market structures and mechanisms vary geographically between countries from the same region as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, spatial variations of labour force participation can also be identified in every single country. Local variations in women’s employment are often influenced by several driving forces particularly modernization characteristics. In this research, advanced GIS algorithms were utilized to model female labour force participation (FLFP) in Oman. Several explanatory variables such as female… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Spatial Visualization as Mediating between Mathematics Learning Strategy and Mathematics Achievement among 8th Grade Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Jordanian 8th grade students revealed low achievement in mathematics through four periods (1999, 2003, 2007 & 2011) of Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). This study aimed to determine whether spatial visualization mediates the affect of Mathematics Learning Strategies (MLS) factors namely mathematics attitude, mathematics motivation, mathematics self-regulation, mathematics self-efficacy, and mathematics anxiety on mathematics achievement. The study consists of 360 students from public middle schools in Alkoura district, selected through stratified random sampling. It employed 65 items to assess MLS, which consists, attitude (18 items), motivation (7 items), self-regulation (25 items), self-efficacy (5 items) and math anxiety (10 items). The mathematics test comprises of 30 items, which has eight items for numbers, 14 items for algebra and eight items for geometry while spatial visualization… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – From the American manufacturing belt to spatial clustering in transnational networks: the evolution of industrial geography as reflected in Geografiska Annaler

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article features the Swedish geographer Sten De Geer’s contribution to the concept and delimitation of the American manufacturing belt, as published in Geografiska Annaler in 1927, and the reception of his article among US geographers. The marked attention paid to this article contributed to the positioning of Geografiska Annaler as one of the leading European journals of geography in the North American academic debate. Later articles published in Geografiska Annaler during the ensuing nine decades illustrate how the field of industrial geography developed in Sweden and internationally. It is demonstrated that today’s economic geographers have made deliberate attempts to more closely cooperate across disciplinary boundaries, particularly towards the field of international business, in order to better understand… Continue Reading

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine fifth graders’ mathematical reasoning and spatial ability, to identify a correlation with their learning styles, and to determine the predictive power of their learning styles on their mathematical learning profiles. This causal study was conducted with 97 fifth graders (60 females, 61.9% and 37 males, 38.1%). The data were collected using three instruments: the Test on Learning Styles, the Mathematical Reasoning Test, and the Spatial Ability Test. Considering the combined… Continue Reading

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract In this paper we present and discuss the importance and relevance of the inclusion of spatial data analysis as part of the undergraduate statistics curriculum. Given its usefulness and applicability across a range of disciplines, spatial data is a topic that should receive more emphasis within undergraduate statistics curricula. There exist many topical and intriguing spatial data sets from different areas of research that can bring fruitful discussions into the classroom including the environment, medicine, and political science.… Continue Reading
