In Qatar, concepts such as “equality of opportunity” and “diversity or inclusion in the profession” are virtually unexplored by research and only beginning to appear in casual conversations. While the number of women studying law in Qatar has significantly increased, the number of women practicing law as prosecutors, judges and lawyers has not directly correlated. An explanatory mixed methods research design was adopted, including a survey completed by 308 participants and group interviews involving 38 participants. Data were gathered from student teachers completing their university education in three countries: Qatar, Lebanon, and China. Results indicated the prevalence of and a preference for a passive mode of instruction among student teachers as a convenient approach that would guarantee good grades from assessment procedures favouring memorization. However, the current research bridges the gap in the literature by exploring the impact of students’ reflective journals on informing instructional practices in an EFL writing context at a university in Qatar. Informed by Gibb’s reflective cycle (1988) (i.e. description, feelings, evaluation, conclusion and action) and social constructionism, the researcher developed a reflective journal to help students reflect on the instructional practices.
