tandfonline.com – Coup de Grâce for a Tough Old Bull: “Statistically Significant” Expires

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Many controversies in statistics are due primarily or solely to poor quality control in journals, bad statistical textbooks, bad teaching, unclear writing, and lack of knowledge of the historical literature. One way to improve the practice of statistics and resolve these issues is to do what initiators of the 2016 ASA statement did: take one issue at a time, have extensive discussions about the issue among statisticians of diverse backgrounds and perspectives and eventually develop and publish a broadly supported consensus on that issue. Upon completion of this task, we then move on to deal with another core issue in the same way. We propose as the next project a process that might lead quickly to a strong… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Using students’ selection of significant events in mathematics lessons to deduce their underlying predispositions

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Learners’ perspectives on classroom teaching have been explored in various ways. Within the context of past research, the student voice approach has shown the potential of making teaching and learning more effective. This article reports on students’ perceptions with the aim of revealing their predispositions in the sense of Bruner’s perceptual set theory concerning mathematics lessons. By asking students about significant events in specific mathematics lessons they attended and their associated justifications, insights into students’ predispositions (beliefs) about teaching and learning mathematics are gained. We were able to reconstruct a wide range of predispositions, which indicate both a view on mathematics education that is quite positive and as well a willingness to learn comprehensively. As a further result, we… Continue Reading

sciencedirect.com – Toward a pedagogy for slow and significant learning about assessment in teacher education

sciencedirect.com har udgivet: Highlights • Supportive cycles of relational and practical learning experiences are needed for deepening assessment learning. • Assessment approaches shifted to research-based practices via coursework/practicum cycles and peer/mentor feedback. • Findings confirmed Fink’s (2003) findings that significant learning involves interactive and non-hierarchical experiences. • Data suggest teacher candidates need more explicit attention on learning how to learn. Abstract Teacher candidates are required to learn substantial fundamental and practical knowledge often within short, fast-paced initial teacher education (ITE) programs. This study examined assessment education through a case study of 35 teacher candidates enrolled in an assessment/evaluation concentration at one Canadian institution. Using a slow movement framework with Fink’s (2013) significant learning experiences taxonomy, pedagogies were analyzed that provoked slow and significant learning. Findings from multiple data sources revealed… Continue Reading
