eric.ed.gov har udgivet: NASA CONNECT is an annual series of integrated mathematics, science, and technology instructional distance learning programs for students in grades 6-8. This program is designed for students to learn about the evolution of flight. The program has three components–television broadcast, Web activity, and lesson guide–which are designed as an integrated instructional package. Students learn how the Wright Brothers became the first human beings to successfully design, construct, and fly an airplane and which method the Wright Brothers used in designing their airplane. Students also observe NASA engineers and researchers using problem-solving skills to design wings that will change their shape during flight. By conducting hands-on and Web activities, students make connections between NASA research and the mathematics, science, and technology they learn in the classroom. The educator… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet is designed to be used with a video of the classroom of second-grade teacher Victoria Bill. The 40-minute video shows the teacher using a variety of manipulations, facilitating both large- and small-group discussions, and applying a problem-solving approach to math. The text in the booklet is based on spoken comments made by observers as they watched the videotape, and provides added insight into the instructional methods used in the class. The video and the accompanying booklet are divided into 16 events, each representing a change in the activities in the classroom. The discussion of each event begins with an assessment and overall description of the event, followed by discussions of classroom management, problem solving, and teaching strategies used in each example. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The guide is intended for teacher trainers providing pre- and in-service programs for mathematics, science, and language teachers, and designed to accompany a 34-minute videotape recording of the same title (not included here), to help teachers integrate language learning and academic mastery in math and science. The video was created for a teacher training program for schools with high proportions of ethnic- and linguistic-minority students, but has been effective with native-English-speaking students who have difficulty with the specialized languages of math and science. It is consistent with guidelines of major math and science teaching associations. The video illustrates ways in which language, math, and science teachers can promote classroom discourse characterized by inquiry, problem-solving, clarification and justification of ideas, and teacher-student interaction. It uses a documentary approach,… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this document are a final report and guide from a project to produce a 30-minute training videotape that provided volunteer tutors and paid adult educators with concrete methods, techniques, and activities to help adult learners improve their numeracy skills. According to the final report, representatives of various adult education programs/advocacy groups who had expertise or interest in math were invited to comprise the design team to collaborate on content. The design team also developed the video’s viewer’s guide, “Math Anxiety, a Video Guide for Adult Literacy Tutors.” A scriptwriter, production company, and post-production editing facility were retained to execute the actual production of the video. Appended to the report are correspondence, needs assessment, math video script, and the video evaluation form. The introduction to the video… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project to develop special training materials to introduce college teachers to the math-language approach is reported. The materials link language learning techniques to mathematics concept formation and are intended for teachers of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. Specialists in both fields produced a three-part training package consisting of an instructor’s guide and a video program, to be used as an introduction to and rationale for using the approach, and as a general blueprint for a text and workbook produced by the Center for Applied Linguistics and entitled “English Skills for Algebra.” The report describes activities undertaken in developing the materials and assessing their effectiveness as compared to the conventional workshop method of teacher training. Results of interviews and surveys indicate that the materials provide the necessary classroom guidance… Continue Reading →
