Eric.ed.gov – Effective Educational Programs: Meta-Findings from the Best Evidence Encyclopedia

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: One of the major series of reviews in elementary and secondary education is the Best Evidence Encyclopedia, or the BEE. Up to now, findings for systematic reviews have largely been restricted to the reviews themselves, with few cases in which lessons learned across many reviews using similar methods can be synthesized. The completion of the Best Evidence Encyclopedia reading and math reviews permits a first opportunity to describe both substantive and methodological patterns across a broad set of studies involving all elementary and secondary grades, reviewed using a common set of review procedures. The purpose of the proposed paper is to synthesize both substantive and methodological findings across the five main Best Evidence Encyclopedia reviews of reading and math programs in grades K-12. The paper considers the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Personalizing Instruction Through Competency-Based Teacher Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The pilot program is designed to implement individualized instruction for the prospective teacher (Competency-Based Teacher Education Model) and public school children (Personalized Instruction Model). Students participate in an individualized learning program while aspiring teachers complete their teacher training competencies through knowledge and performance levels at Portal Schools. The children work in open-space instructional areas that utilize diagnosing and prescribing methods, scope and sequence activities, learning centers, learning activity packages, and contracts. Teachers demonstrate their competencies with specific skills, which include the following: motivating and reinforcing students, producing instructional materials, and personalizing instruction. All competencies are completed on-site with the assistance of clinical professors. Two supportive elements of this pilot program are a) using volunteers to tutor children in math and reading skills and to produce instructional materials… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Establishing a Strong Foundation: District and School Supports for Classroom Implementation of the MDC Framework

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has invested in the development and dissemination of high-quality formative assessment tools to support teachers’ incorporation of the Core Common State Standards (CCSS) into their classroom instruction. Lessons from the first generation of standards-based reforms suggest that intense attention to high quality instructional tasks, use of formative assessments embedded in those tasks, and professional development (PD) that attends to both content knowledge and instruction are essential considerations if teachers are to meet the demands of the CCSS. Experts from the Shell Centre have developed a set of formative assessment lessons (FALs) for high school mathematics teachers to facilitate CCSS-based student mathematics learning and provide teachers with feedback about student understanding and mastery. The tools are designed to target the “instructional core”… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Towards an Understanding of Development in Transformational Teacher Education.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Arguing that transformative teacher professional development may require more than a shift in the content of teachers’ thinking, this paper examines how the structure of teachers’ meaning-making systems might affect their experiences in three mathematics teacher professional development programs. The paper describes the change goals of three teacher professional development programs and their methods for accomplishing those goals. SummerMath for Teachers attempts to support a shift in teachers’ paradigms about mathematics and learning by asking them to personally engage with and reflect on mathematics and pedagogy. The Math Case Methods Project supports teachers in re-evaluating and complicating their ideas about mathematics and mathematics teaching through collaborative inquiry into practice via mathematics teaching cases. The Algebra Project seeks to change the expectations of teachers, students, and the broader… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math for the 1980’s: A Response to the PRIME-80. A Conference/Workshop at Augusta College.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A conference/workshop held in late 1979 which was aimed at improving the teaching of mathematics is reviewed. The conference was a response to the PRIME-80 conference of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), which had produced recommendations that something should be done to reverse the decline of educational skills among entering college freshmen. The conference was viewed as a success by both the participants and the organizers. It was stated that many colleges can offer a conference of this sort in their own community that could focus on the particular needs and issues in mathematics education for the region. Such a conference can provide benefits that can far outweigh the small monetary outlay. (MP) Link til kilde
