tandfonline.com – The link between flipped and active learning: a scoping review

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Flipped learning in higher education is becoming increasingly widespread. Although the number of flipped learning articles has increased since 2011, systematic reviews of flipped learning have been criticized for lacking a theoretical framework. The aim in this article is to explore the link between flipped learning and active learning: specifically, which theoretical frameworks are described. A scoping review was adopted as the research methodology. The selected studies indicate that this link between flipped learning and active learning is rarely explicitly addressed or operationalized. Approximately 65% of the 435 full-text articles retrieved do not explicitly connect their research to theory or a conceptual framework. The remaining 155 studies included for analysis refer to a mix of pedagogical terms or… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Encouraging student participation in mathematical activities in synchronous online tuition

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Active learning in mathematics can lead to deeper understanding than passively listening to a lecture, yet recent studies indicate that didactic teaching dominates online tutorials. This study investigated student participation in three types of activity: solving mathematical problems via polling, on-screen activities on a shared whiteboard and text-chat, during online undergraduate mathematics tutorials. Data were collected from tutorial observations, student and tutor surveys, semi-structured student interviews and a tutor focus group. Results showed high student participation in all types of activity. Students also perceived them as enjoyable and aiding their learning, though with some differences between the types of activity such as those done by text-chat being slightly less well received. Perceived benefits to students’ learning included the… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Introduction to the Special Issue: Insights and Lessons Learned from Mathematics Departments in the Process of Change

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract This editorial provides an introduction to the special issue, Infusing active learning into precalculus and calculus courses: Insights and lessons learned from mathematics departments in the process of change. We begin with providing the background for the special issue, including an overview of the current status of active learning in precalculus through calculus, what many of the papers in this issue mean by the term “active learning” (inquiry based mathematics education), and a brief overview of the literature on institutional change. We then offer an overview of each of the three issues, explaining how various papers relate to each other within each issue. We conclude the editorial with some reflections on the institutional changes efforts in light of the… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Design and impact of the national workshop for early career geoscience faculty

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The National Association of Geoscience Teachers’ Workshop for Early Career Geoscience Faculty: Teaching, Research, and Managing One’s Career has been offered annually since 1999. The five-day workshop with accompanying web resources employs a “whole faculty” approach to support geoscience faculty members during their transition into academic careers. More than 1,000 faculty members (53% female, 47% male) have attended the national workshop; 52% from doctoral-granting institutions, 15% master’s, 28% bachelor’s, and 5% associates. Evidence-based instructional practices are shared and modeled during workshop sessions. Situated learning theory grounds the workshop design and promotes the development of a community of practice. Examination of the 2016 National Geoscience Faculty Survey data using univariate analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) showed that workshop alumni report… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Hands-Joined Learning as a Framework for Personalizing Project-Based Learning in a Middle Grades Classroom: An Exploratory Study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract This study investigates the hands-joined learning framework as an approach to personalize and provide instructional scaffolding within project-based learning. The authors include a case description of hands-joined learning in a middle school social studies classroom and critically examine middle school student feedback in relation to two aims: (a) personalizing learning, and (b) providing adequate scaffolding. Student feedback indicated that the hands-joined learning project was largely successful in these two areas. Learners appreciated having choice and control in what they learned and created in the project but also pointed to the need for greater opportunities to make decisions in how they learned. Some learners also wanted more peer interaction. These findings are used to propose practical implications as well… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Digital assessment – how does it challenge local practices and national law? A Norwegian case study

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The traditional exam has a strong holding within Norwegian higher education and is very often the preferred way of assessing students. Digital technology opens up for alternatives to the traditional exam, but so far focus has predominantly been on exchanging pen and paper with personal computers within the traditional framework. Digital alternatives may come in conflict with existing law governing teaching and assessment at university, as the law was written at a time when digital technology did not exist. We present data from a workshop in which 48 individuals from 11 institutions, academics as well as administration, were asked to identify and discuss challenges related to the introduction of digital alternatives. A case study strategy was considered appropriate… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – V for Voice: Strategies for Bolstering Communication Skills in Statistics

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT With the ease and automation of data collection and plummeting storage costs, organizations are faced with massive amounts of data that present two pressing challenges: technical analysis of the data themselves and communication of the analytics process and its products. Although a plethora of academic and practitioner literature have focused on the former call, the latter challenge has received less attention. Here, we present strategies that we have found effective for bolstering communication skills of both undergraduate students and masters candidates at a business school. These approaches are based on the case studies that provide ample opportunity for oral communication among students with strong backgrounds in mathematics and introductory statistics, and solid training in written communication among student… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Components of a Flipped Classroom Influencing Student Success in an Undergraduate Business Statistics Course

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT An instructor transformed an undergraduate business statistics course over 10 semesters from a traditional lecture course to a flipped classroom course. The researcher used a linear mixed model to explore the effectiveness of the evolution on student success as measured by exam performance. The results provide guidance to successfully implement a flipped classroom course. The largest improvements were achieved by replacing face-to-face lecture with active learning exercises and using quizzes to verify student engagement with offline materials. Using conditional release of course materials to encourage homework completion also provided a significant benefit to students who missed class often. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Inquiry as an entry point to equity in the classroom

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Although many policy documents include equity as part of mathematics education standards and principles, researchers continue to explore means by which equity might be supported in classrooms and at the institutional level. Teaching practices that include opportunities for students to engage in active learning have been proposed to address equity. In this paper, through aligning some characteristics of inquiry put forth by Cook, Murphy and Fukawa-Connelly with Gutiérrez’s dimensions of equity, we theoretically explore the ways in which active learning teaching practices that focus on inquiry could support equity in the classroom. ABSTRACT Much has been made of the flipped classroom as an approach to teaching, and its effect on student learning. The volume of material showing that the flipped classroom technique helps students better learn and better retain material is increasing at a rapid pace. Coupled with this technique is active learning in the classroom. There are many ways of “flipping the classroom.” The particular realization of the flipped classroom that we discuss in this article is based on a… Continue Reading
