Eric.ed.gov – The Effects of Differentiated Instruction on Motivation and Engagement in Fifth-Grade Gifted Math and Music Students

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this action research project report was to increase student motivation and engagement. There seemed to be an increasing disconnect between student potential and performance, especially among gifted math and beginning music students. Two teacher researchers carried out this research with 25 fifth-grade students at two different sites in a gifted math class and a beginning band class. The research was conducted from September 11th, 2012, through December 17th, 2012. In order to document the lack of student motivation and engagement, three tools were utilized; a teacher survey, a student survey, and a student behavior checklist. After analyzing the collected data, it was evident that a notable percentage of students felt that their school work was too easy while teachers felt their lessons were appropriately… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Increasing Student Engagement in Math: The Use of Khan Academy in Chilean Classrooms

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Khan Academy, an online platform offering educational videos and exercises in different content areas, has awakened intense interest among foundations, multilateral organizations, policy makers, and educators about how this tool can help meet the educational challenges facing countries around the world. With support from Intel, Education Development Center (EDC) researchers sought to understand how this technology fits into the complex realities of schools in a developing country. In August of 2013, researchers traveled to Santiago, Chile to conduct research in five schools where teachers are using Khan Academy. We found that the way Khan Academy functions as a digital learning environment changes the ways and the degree to which students engage with and are engaged by the math content; it also changes the way teachers and students… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Promoting Classroom Engagement Through the Use of an Online Student Response System: A Mixed Methods Analysis

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The use of online student response systems (OSRSs) is increasing within tertiary education providers, however, research investigating their potential to enhance student engagement is limited. The aim of the current study was to examine the impact of an OSRS using an experimental crossover design. Quantitative data measuring student engagement was compared from pre- to post-intervention. A qualitative analysis was used to further investigate student perceptions of the OSRS. The results from this study suggest that OSRSs may be appropriate tools to increase student engagement in undergraduate statistics classes. Despite no significant change in engagement scores observed when students were exposed to the OSRS than when they were not, students appreciated the novelty of the OSRS and perceived it… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Student Engagement and Math Teachers Support

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence student engagement in mathematics classes. It explored the relationship among emotional, organizational, and instructional support and the impacts of characteristics of teacher, such as years of experience, and sexual orientation, on student engagement. Data were taken from the Consortium for Political and Social Research. The study was involved mathematics teachers and encompassed three years of data collection and observation. Data were collected first hand through classroom observations and student–teacher surveys. In this study, ANOVA, t-test, and partial correlation were employed to evaluate the relationships among the study variables based on participants’ responses. The relationship between student engagement and instructional support weakened after controlling for emotional and organizational support. However, instructional support continued to significantly influence student engagement. In… Continue Reading
