tandfonline.com – Reflection as a core student learning activity in higher education – Insights from nearly two decades of academic development

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Experiential learning (EL) has great potential to prepare students to work on interdisciplinary and global challenges across traditional boundaries, as well as support them in the development of reflective skills. In this study, we explore reflection as a central element for EL in the university wide interdisciplinary course Experts in Teamwork (EiT). Based upon 17 years of experience with the development of EiT, perspectives from the literature, and critically analyzing current practices, we describe two key findings from this ongoing exploration: the need to develop a framework for such a course and the need for training of teaching staff. tandfonline.com – Improving learning opportunities for special education needs (SEN) students by engaging pre-service science teachers in an informal experiential learning course

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Inclusive education (IE) has the potential to improve special education needs (SEN) students’ learning outcomes, but IE requires teachers receive adequate training to be effective. We introduce an approach to pre-service teacher preparation using experiential learning in an informal learning environment to educate beginning teachers about effective science teaching for SEN students. Using data collected from observations, survey, interviews, and autobiographical reflections, we explored how teachers’ engagement in an informal teaching experience impacted their perceptions about SEN students, their beliefs about the value of teaching science to SEN students, and their beliefs about their future responsibilities to support SEN students in inclusive classrooms. Findings expand our understanding of how to prepare new science teachers to improve science learning… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – V for Voice: Strategies for Bolstering Communication Skills in Statistics

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT With the ease and automation of data collection and plummeting storage costs, organizations are faced with massive amounts of data that present two pressing challenges: technical analysis of the data themselves and communication of the analytics process and its products. Although a plethora of academic and practitioner literature have focused on the former call, the latter challenge has received less attention. Here, we present strategies that we have found effective for bolstering communication skills of both undergraduate students and masters candidates at a business school. These approaches are based on the case studies that provide ample opportunity for oral communication among students with strong backgrounds in mathematics and introductory statistics, and solid training in written communication among student… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Engaging Students in the Practice of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT As statisticians, we engage in a variety of activities, some of which are regularly integrated into our undergraduate courses. However, the individual courses that comprise a mathematics or statistics degree program might not provide students with experiences in the broader range of activities that define the practice of statistics. To remedy this situation, faculty can consider developing and mentoring undergraduate research projects. This article briefly discusses the skills that comprise statistical practice along with some course and program options for helping students to develop these skills. Then, types of undergraduate research projects in statistics are described to help faculty generate ideas for projects they could mentor. Several examples of each type of undergraduate research project are provided. Link… Continue Reading

Abstract Despite widespread calls for the incorporation of mathematical modeling into the undergraduate biology curriculum, there is lack of a common understanding around the definition of modeling, which inhibits progress. In this paper, we extend the “Rule-of-Four,” initially used in calculus reform efforts, to a “Rule-of-Five” framework for models and modeling that is inclusive of varying disciplinary definitions of each. This unifying framework allows us to both build on strengths that each discipline and its students bring, but also… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Data Visualization: Bringing Data to Life in an Introductory Statistics Course

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Although the use of tables, graphs, and figures to summarize information has long existed, the advent of the big data era and improved computing power has brought renewed attention to the field of data visualization. As such, it is crucial that introductory statistics courses train students to become critical authors and consumers of data visualizations. To that end, we have developed a semester-long, instructor-supported, group project that exposes students to this growing field. We have found this project to be an exciting and effective way to teach students the power of statistics and, more importantly, the critical role context plays when interpreting statistics. Among the many benefits of this project are hands-on learning, improved mathematical reasoning, and better… Continue Reading
