Eric.ed.gov – The Perceptions of Primary Grade Teachers and Elementary Principals about the Effectiveness of Grade-Level Retention

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitudes of primary grade teachers and elementary principals about grade retention. Because grade retention is typically initiated in the primary grades, it is important to understand educators’ beliefs about it as a viable option for low-performing students. A paper survey was sent to teachers and principals in one school district, inviting them to provide their perceptions about the reasons for grade retention, the most appropriate time to retain students, and the effectiveness of interventions in deterring the use of grade retention. Overall, teachers and principals believed students should be retained because of academic performance and perceived parental involvement as the most promising intervention to deter the use of grade retention. Teachers agreed significantly more than principals that retention… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Using Subjective Teacher Evaluations to Examine Principals’ Personnel Management

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher evaluation is at the center of current education policy reform. Most evaluation systems rely at least in part on principals’ assessments of teachers, and their discretionary judgments carry substantial weight. However, we know relatively little about what they value when determining evaluations and high stakes personnel decisions. The author leverages unique data from a public charter school district to explore the extent to which school administrators’ formative evaluations of teachers align with teacher and school effectiveness and predict future personnel decisions. While previous research has examined administrators’ subjective evaluations of teachers in surveys and in practice, this study links a detailed evaluation in practice with multiple types of personnel decisions to provide new insights into administrator decision-making. A better understanding of the teacher contributions that administrators… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Year 3 of Implementing the Common Core State Standards: Professional Development for Teachers and Principals

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Timely, ongoing, and effective professional development for teachers and principals will be critical to the successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These voluntary state-developed standards in mathematics and English language arts (ELA) outline the knowledge and skills that students in grades kindergarten through 12 are expected to learn to be prepared for college and careers. As of July 2013, the CCSS have been adopted in math and ELA by 45 states and the District of Columbia and by one additional state in ELA only. If teachers and principals are going to be prepared to help their students master the Common Core and pass the aligned assessments that will be ready in school year 2014-15, they will need professional development on various issues related to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – School Principals’ Reflective Leadership Skills through the Eyes of Science and Mathematics Teachers

In order to enable this success in school organizations, each employee in the school should make an effort for development and effective operation of the school organization. A reflective school leader is effective in enabling and sustaining this success by utilizing their reflective leadership traits. The aim of this research is to determine the reflective leadership levels of school principals by science and math teachers’ viewpoints. Sample of the research is composed of a total of 147 volunteer teachers 68 of whom serve as science teachers and 79 as math teachers in high schools in Çorum city center. Data have been collected through “reflective leadership” scale… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Do More Effective Teachers Become More Effective Principals? Working Paper No. 215-0119-1

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Principals are widely seen as a key influence on the educational environment of schools, and nearly all principals have experience as teachers. Yet there is no evidence on whether we can predict the effectiveness of principals (as measured by their value added) based on their value added as teachers, an issue we explore using administrative data from Washington. Several descriptive features of the principal labor market stand out. First, teachers who become principals tend to have higher levels of educational attainment while teaching and are less likely to be female, but we find no significant differences in licensure test scores between those teachers who become principals and those we do not observe in the principalship. Second, principal labor markets appear to be quite localized: about 50 percent… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Enrichment in school principals’ ways of seeing mathematics

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract This study presents a case of a problem that did not originate in theory but rather ended in theory. It addresses the issue of the prevalent, traditional public view of the nature of mathematics and that of its teaching and learning that might hamper mathematics reform. In this study, we present a five-day professional development programme that was designed and conducted within the context of practice-oriented research to help elementary school principals to enrich their views of mathematics in order to see mathematics in a different way, more aligned with mathematics reform. Data was generated before, during, and at the end of this programme, and results showed significant enrichment in participants’ views of mathematics. By using the Variation Theory… Continue Reading
