eric.ed.gov har udgivet: It is imperative that classroom teachers encourage emergent literacy without sacrificing literature or an introduction to some of the basic concepts in the content areas. This annotated bibliography features some examples of titles recommended by “Best Books for Children” which carry content standards recently established by national organizations and/or state departments of education for the lower grades. The bibliography lists four books which are compatible with science education content standards, four books which are compatible with history-social science standards, and five books which are compatible with mathematics content standards. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The New York State Education Department, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, developed a “Striving Readers project” to address the literacy needs of early adolescent struggling readers in middle school. The goal of the project was to implement and examine the impact of a one-year comprehensive supplemental literacy intervention offered in New York City middle schools. The 11 schools included in the study were drawn from 4 of the 5 boroughs of New York City, and were relatively homogeneous. Most were primarily male, and Hispanic/Latino. From the fourth grade these Grade 7 learners received their instruction through the medium of English, and offered English as Second Language in addition to another Namibian language. They were enrolled in schools that performed above-average in the Namibian Standardised Achievement Test for English language and with reasonable access to reading resources. However, Tomlinson says barriers still stand in the way to making sure every child gets what he or she needs. One hurdle, says Tomlinson, is that teachers have to do something that’s both basic and difficult: forget how they were taught as children.
