tandfonline.com – Analysis of the intended mathematics curriculum revision process in Mozambique from the perspective of relevance

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The local needs and circumstances in curriculum revision often necessitate improvements in the quality of education. However, problems associated with the revision of curricula in developing countries have been observed from a range of perspectives in previous studies. This study investigates the revision process of the intended mathematics curriculum in Mozambique through document analysis of related materials and interviews with people involved in the 2015 curriculum revision. The investigation revealed three points. First, the results of nationwide surveys on academic ability conducted by the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MEHD) as well as interviews of parents and teacher questionnaires significantly affected the curriculum-revision process. Second, aligned with the political regulations, opinions from various social and economic groups… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Relevant or interesting according to upper secondary students? Affective aspects of context-based chemistry problems

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background: To make students more interested and engaged in science, new teaching approaches have been developed aiming at higher order thinking. Context-based learning approaches emanate from an idea that science content knowledge should be presented in a relevant context for students to improve their learning outcomes as well as making them more engaged in science. Previous research on context-based learning approaches has shown positive results; however, researchers and teachers need to explicitly consider which aspects of the contextual settings young students perceive as interesting and relevant to improve chemistry education. Purpose: In this paper, the constructs of ‘interest’ and ‘relevance’ are explored to analyse which aspects of open-ended chemistry problems engage students. Sample and Design: Both qualitative interview… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Disciplinary literacy in religious education: the role and relevance of reading

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Although religion has played a key role in reading instruction in many education systems, this position has been challenged by increasing religious diversity and the spread of non-religious worldviews. Simultaneously, there has been growing interest in the role of disciplinary literacy in education (i.e. the ways in which a discipline’s knowledge is created, shared and evaluated) as well as the role of the reader. Drawing on classroom observations and interviews in an exploratory study, the article focuses on how adolescents experience reading in religious education (RE). The study shows that students relate meaning-making in RE to developing respect and tolerance, that teachers focus on conceptual understanding while students request a focus on lived religion, and that student meaning-making… Continue Reading

ABSTRACT Pre-service physics teachers often do not recognise the relevance for their future career in their university content knowledge courses. A lower perceived relevance can, however, have a negative effect on their motivation and on their academic success. Several intervention studies have been undertaken with the goal to increase this perceived relevance. A previous study shows that conceptual physics problems used in university physics courses are perceived by pre-service physics teachers as more relevant for their future career than… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Changing students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics in an advanced secondary mathematics class

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT This study shows that using authentic contexts for learning differential equations in a differentiation-by-interest setting can enhance students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics. The students in this study were studying advanced mathematics (wiskunde D) at upper secondary school in the Netherlands. These students are often not aware of the relevance of the mathematics they have to learn in school. More insights into the application of mathematics in other sciences can be beneficial for these students in terms… Continue Reading
